I just got a phone call from a mother of a twenty year old named

who has acquired speech and other issues due to a motorcycle accident

this past December (and yes he had a helmet on but a car ran a light

and hit him straight on) that left him almost dead. After months of

hospitalization he is now able to move a bit -like his finger or leg -

and is still fighting so he can get back to his life. In addition to

being a son -he is married and father to a one year old child. He

has pulled through so much already and is still fighting. He

responded to speech therapy and has since said three words -

" hi " " mom " and " dad " but his mother said he's always moving his mouth

like he's trying to talk -but he just can't. Apraxia? Don't know as

there is no diagnosis of any sort the mother knew of for some reason

(which may explain the following but not sure)

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida has cut off all speech therapy

because they said the limit is only 60 days. The mother searched

online and found CHERAB and called me. I have already put her in

touch with Dr. Renai Jonas here in Florida and gave her some

insurance tips we know from this group - but told her that I would

post this story here in hopes there are more that have experience

with adult onset than I do.

The mom -Terri's email address is akulp@... and they are in

the Jupiter Florida area. She has given permission for me to post

this here with her email in case anyone wants to share here or

contact her. Most of our professional consultants are working with

children up to teens for the most part.

If you are a professional that works with adult onset and would like

to be a consultant to CHERAB to be put up on our soon to be " new "

website (!!) please email me at lisa@... There is a huge need

to have more resources in the advocacy area for teens and adults with

apraxia -I'm hearing that more and more.

On another note and since I brought up Dr. Renai Jonas (Tanner's SLP)

just wanted to share that one of the members here from Melbourne,

Florida was travelling back and forth for hours to take their child

to see Dr. Renai Jonas and just relocated to Boca from Melbourne to

be near Dr.Jonas. Apparently they have taken their child to

Kaufman and to Debra Beckman and neither was able to help this 3 year

old child who for whatever reason was very afraid of therapists -

probably due to that it took a bit more to work with this child who

is " very smart " . I don't recall who this is but apparently I spoke

to this family on the phone and gave them Renai's name with a high

recommendation -but I always do for all Florida families no matter

how far away -I know she has a patient in the panhandle!!

And as an update -Renai has made remarkable progress with this child -

same child that other experts had no success with -so again this is

why I say there's always hope! And even if you have to travel it's

worth it to find the right therapist or doctor! This family is the

second family that relocated to have their child near Dr. Renai

Jonas. I'm happy we live close by!! (well close enough -it is an

hour drive each way but worth it!)

Again if anyone has anything to share here or private on how to best

help secure therapy through insurance for it will be much

appreciated!
