Guest guest
Hi Sharon I just wanted to clarify, that my original post was not refering to my doctor actually labeling my sons mentally retarded, but it was a response to someone on the board that was a little set back when used the terminology (mentally retarded) in a clinical reference. I was just stating that my doctor had refered to my kids as being atypically developing when I, in fact, had asked her if my children were retarded.... So I just wanted to let you know that it was not me to whom this was said to. I was just trying to offer a new term that my doctor had used with my boys......and she was right....they were atypical developing. We got things under control though, and one of my boys lost his diagnosis after 10 months of biomedical treatment....diet changes, etc...and the other one is speaking lots now with beautiful articulation and is just catching up. Social behaviour is probably is biggest challenge, but he is overcoming this with more exposure to peers. (Today however we had a small victory when he said, " I'm sorry " , when he bumped into a little one at playgroup! YEAH!) Drooling is gone now too. (well as long as we stay away from milk products). I am not really stuck on this, I just wanted to clarify again that it was not said to me or my boys...............(emails....they are sometimes hard to convey meaning and feeling!) Cheers! sharon lang wrote: > -- > > I am not trying to stir up trouble here at all. Somehow the word retarded got equated with > mentally retarded and those are not the same. Since the word has such a derogatory connnotation, I can see why your ears would raise when he said that. I personally do not care for the word at all and all the professionals I know use mentally challenged, mentally handicapped or atleast MR , if it is applicable. > > Since the doctor was not referring to the child's mental abilities, as far as I understand it, it seems to me that he meant no harm. > > I firmly believe that life is 10 percent what happens to us and 90 percent what we choose about what happens to us.It just seems like alot of energy and anger over a word that was actually used correctly and probably not intended to offend or hurt your feelings in anyway. I guess I am just trying to say, in a toned down manner, let it go. So he (or she) used the R word. Atleast he used it correctly; it is a real word. I am sure the doctor gave no thought at all to this little passing.
