Guest guest
although this was an informal eval...not scales or tools used... just an observation... He was horrible while the nurse was trying to take his height, weight and blood pressure...and then when we went into the office, they had new to him toys so he went straight for it (I often say he cares more about toys than people) and then sat there with one of them doing imaginary play for like an hour...purely angelic...I coudlnt' believe it... One asked questions while one entertained him...then they switched...and the other took him out of the room to get him to run and stuff... Then they had a conference and made us go into the waiting room where he is bouncing around. I go back and they tell me he has ADHD and behavior problems...coudlnt' define/quantify/ etc the behavior problems...which I think mostly stem from sensory, changes in schedule or rituals, opposition...but they didn't want to think about that. They said he was too social with them...I argued that its a problem with peer relationships...and that I was in a room full of aspie children who wanted to show off and share with the adults there. They also tried to tell me his communication skills were too good...which is clearly in the DSM for aspergers. Then when I argued with that, they said his language early on wouldn't have been that good...he had three months of speech therapy when he first started withdrawing and then he had a PDD-NOS dx b/c he didn't talk enough in public. They didn't seemed moved. Then one of them tried to tell me that the DSM-IV for aspergers was written for Adults and so its talking about relating to adults when it reads peers...isn't that crazy? I looked at her like she was speaking french and then she corrected herself and so 'no with aspergers I guess it is written for chidlren " ...can you believe that? I don't know what to do...they said he needs behavior intervention in his natural enviroment, but they were doing the eval for the behavior program and by saying ADHD was his dx without giving any explanation for his behavior means we wont get it...I am soooo frustrated! I don't know what to do. We dont' have the money to take him all around and get the right diagnosis. Any suggestions welcomed! deb...mom to three great adopted kids... Guest guest
Deb, I got close to the same reaction from the first psychologist I took to. It wasn't until I took him to a University Hospital with a Neuropsychologist that I found someone who really knew what Asperger was. That first psychologist and the pediatrician that was supposidly an expert with child behavior problems both thought that in order for him to have Asperger, he had to show symptoms of lower functioning autism. It is also difficult for me to take to experts because of finances and I am still dealing with that. I keep hearing advice to take him to UCLA to their wonderful Aspeger program. It is a 70 mile or greater trip through the worst part of LA to get there. By the time I made it, may be in a great place, but I'd have to be admitted to the psyche ward just to get over the drive!LOL Not to mention that the car would not make it back, so we'd just have to take our sleeping bags and move in. Guest guest
You are defininteiy dealing with people who don't know m uch about ASD's. Actually in the DSM lV TR it states that no clinically significant delay in language can be present in ORDER to get a dx of Aspergers, then it is usually dxed as HFA. Anyone with a clue knows that these kids need to be observed in novel social situations and what psych in their right mind would screen for anything without " scales or tools " in 2003? I'll bet a ton of people on this list have been told their child is " too social " to be on the spectrum, usually from people whose entire experience with autism has been watching Dateline and Rainman. I dont know where you are from but the services you are going to lose or never get might be worth the investment of taking him somewhere else. If a school district did this then they can probably be held liable for the cost of your reassessment if you find they were wrong. Hope you get accurate assesment somewhere! - christine > although this was an informal eval...not scales or tools used... > > just an observation... > > He was horrible while the nurse was trying to take his height, weight and > blood pressure...and then when we went into the office, they had new to him toys > so he went straight for it (I often say he cares more about toys than people) > and then sat there with one of them doing imaginary play for like an > hour...purely angelic...I coudlnt' believe it... > > One asked questions while one entertained him...then they switched...and the > other took him out of the room to get him to run and stuff... > > Then they had a conference and made us go into the waiting room where he is > bouncing around.
