Guest guest
Hi , Wow, that guy really takes the cake. Maybe his book tells you how to choose medication...LOL. Definitely consider another pysch..... My nurse friends used to say never never go to the head of a dept for anything....maybe wise words. Not that this guy was head of a dept but its the idea of just because they have high credentials doesn't mean they are good. Good luck and I'd try another one. Bummer you had to waste an hour and money on that guy who really should retire. We saw one doctor last year that made me feel the same way. Guest guest
Hello .....thought I would update on our latest appointment. If you remember my daughter was dx'd with DCD,NLD and possible AS this past spring. We then went to a local psych for some guidance who decided to do her own evalutation and felt that although our daughter shows autistic traits that a dx of AS was not applicable ( we have been over this one before ), BUT she felt Lane was at risk for depression and anxiety disorder. She sent a follow up to our GP who contacted us to say we MUST take our daughter to a psychiatrist so she could be prescribed meds as he was unwilling to do so. So we had the appointment on the 7th with this man, once again a psych with high credentials ( retired head of psych for a major university ).....this man turns out to be in my guesstamation close to 70 years old. We had an hour long appointment in which he talked to my husband and I seperate and together...had us fill out questionaires and spent about 10 minutes with Lane. He then scolded us for having so mych INFORMATION, said that we had info RAINING down upon us,etc. In any event he decided to do his own dx even though that was ont what we asked for. He stated that he did not see any anxiety in our daughter and what we call anxiety is actualy ADHD. He would not presribe anything that day and insisted we buy a book from his office, read it and come back in 8 weeks. If we agree with him he will prescribe meds. When I quesitoned him as to what med he said, " What ever you tell me to " ??????? I don't get this..how am I supposed to choose medication? I don't think I am qualified to do this and I know nothing about these meds except for some success and horror stories I read on list serves. Thinking about jumping off this merry-go-round and just living the way we have been all these years. All we want to do is help our daughter and all they do is take our money and confuse us even more...understand they are not saying these things are in addition to other's dx but instead of. ( with exception of the DCD ) I am going crazy!!!!
Guest guest
Looks like someone's ready for retirement. My therapist is 73 and would never try this stunt. I have learned from all therapist none will go out on a limb. But not choose a medication and by his book. As for the the merry go round...you need to find better support before you get off. Guest guest
, I can't believe that old doctor! And buy a book? Never heard of that! I say, stick with your own research and instincts. Where do you live, perhaps someone here could recommend someone. I'm slow tonite, what is DCD? > Hello .....thought I would update on our latest appointment. Guest guest
, There are good shrinks out there. You just happened upon a loser. This guy is totally irresponsible. He is supposed to be making recommendations to you, not vice versa. When you find a good one, though, it's well worth it. After searching high and low (on our fourth doctor), we hit pay dirt. He doesn't take our insurance, but only sees him every couple of months. It's worth searching for somebody good. And yes, buy a particular book titled Daredevils and Daydreamers. In fact the girl at the desk told me that I could buy it from them or the bookstore, that he refers parents to it so often that he has the office staff buy it from the book store and keep copies at the desk. I live in southeastern Ohio, trust me there is no one on this list that I have seen that lives in the vicinity. He was NOT the doctor that the psychologist recomended but that doctor is not accepting any new patients..she is overwhelmed ( only child psychiatrist in our town ). **********

Guest guest
, I am so sorry you are going through all this. It is a nightmare! ((((((HUGS)))))). I can't say I know what you are going through because we haven't been down hat road. We have had similar problems with 's health problems though so I do know the anger and frustration of nobody having a straight clear cut answer. I don't know what is best for Lane right now but it does sound like you guys need a doctor break. If you chose to go to another psych I would ask other parents who they recommend rather than asking another doctor. Parents have a good feel for these things. , Mom to , reflux, hiatal hernia, compacted bowels, asthma, global hypotonia, motor dyspraxia, SID, Asperger's

Guest guest
Sorry the ticket is one way w/ no stops. The trick is to make the ride as pleasurable as possible. If you do not like this pysch then do not return. I don't believe in too much info! And I am done w/ the I care and I will help if you spend lot's of money and agree w/ everything I say. I don't think I can live like that. From everything I have read many of the so called professionals do NOT know either. There are no magical tests. The BEST thing you can do is learn everything you can. Process the information. Decide what you believe. And go from there. We have to get over the hurdle of diagnoses. In many cases they are closely related w/ much overlap. Try focussing on her exact issues. Then see if you can find the right therapy or medication to fit the problem. I would assume before you picked the medication he would give you info on pros and cons. Also I'd assume your choices would be limited. Apparently he wants to treat the ADHD. Now in all fairness I did not think Hunter was ADHD until I researched it. I was surprised by his dx to say the least. I see it now. I had the wrong impression of ADHD. I'm not saying to buy his book. Just research it. I've gotten to where I go straight to the Diagnostic book. It is what they go by so I think it only makes sense to know it well myself. a
Guest guest
I am so sorry you are having to go thru this. My family has had the same problem. This is a one way ticket though and you can't quit for your daughters sake. I did and it got us nothing but stress and hell. There are sooooooo many goons out there. My AS daughter will focus on something for weeks and not get off it. Once when there was a tornato that is all she could talk or think about. Unfortuantely a week after this tornato happened(in another part of the world) we saw a new renouned psych. She spent 20 minutes with me while lauren was drawing. Then she called lauren in for 5 minutes by herself. Evidentally she asked what her picuture was ... said " Its a tornado and it scares me!( her fixation on the current event!) The pshych called me in there a basically said that my family must be totally dysfuncional and that there must be some major turmoil(sp?) in our home and that my husband and I must learn to get along better in front of her! HELLO!!! How the heck she figured that out from 5 minutes of conversation from a 5 year old kid who is fixated on a current issue that had just happened. We never went back and I told the psych she needed to go back school and learn more about kids with AS because if she knew anything at all she would have known this was a simple case of fixation that alot of AS kids exhibit! As for your daughter..... You are just going to have to keep looking! It is extremely hard to find a psych that is trustworthy and respectable! Keep trying for your daughters sake! Its a tough ride and I am sure we have all been there but you CAN do it!!! Good luck! > Hello .....thought I would update on our latest appointment. If so, I can suggest some people if you'd like. Are you closer to > Cleveland or Columbus? Hi Roxanna.....sorry I am delayed in responses to my initial post,it was a long day at work with a radio remote to boot and I had no time to get on line. I live closer to Columbus than Cleveland and we make trips there every so often especialy now that Corey is attending college there. I don't know why we seem to have more than our share of bad experiences..it seems to be a bad year for us altogether. I am really hoping that takes a turn for the better before long. I DID buy the book because I felt like I had to, it won't hurt to read it and she may actualy have ADHD but I am fed up with this attitude that the other doctors did not know what they were talking about and their opinion is superior. And we do have a lot of information..in my opinion enough information that we should be farther ahead than we currently are on treating symptoms. If you can refer someone I would consider traveling. Now you are going to think I am a nutcase and I know it was just a bunch of hooey but I can't keep out of my mind what a fortune teller told me early last month. Yes, I said fortune teller, lol!!!!! We were at the county fair and about to leave when we spotted this little booth with an older woman..she was doing palm reading. Since Lane had not gone on too many rides we asked her if she would like to do this. The woman seemed a little aprehensive about reading for a child since in her words the lines in her hands were not very pronounced yet but she did it anyway and Lane thought it was fun. I think she felt bad because it cost $5.00 and she had little to say so she offered to read mine for free and aksed if I had any concerns. I replied the only concerns we had were for our daughter and she questioned me if there was something wrong with her. I did not go into detail but pretty much told her there was, especialy with motor concerns. She was quite serious and told me that Lane would get better and that we would meet a doctor soon who would help her greatly. She kept repeating this. I walked away kind of laughing about it but part of me keeps dreaming that maybe she was some sort of gypsy spell caster, etc, etc and maybe it will come true. Rediculous I know. Now I feel really silly. Anyway, thanks for the offer.
