Guest guest
what a bad precedent to be set for autistic/AS kids all across the country. my son had a lot of behavior problems at the beginning of the school year, before the AS diagnosis, but his school was very willing to work me, while i tried to find the diagnosis (it took about a month). everything seems to have settled down with him behaviorally, though i know that he could start up with his negative behaviors again (it's almost like he is in cycle iwth his behaviors). laura son nathaniel recently diagnosed with AS (about a month ago) weinert56 <weinert@...> wrote: Hi, You folks might recall that we are homeschooling. Guest guest
, this happened to our son last year. he was thrown out of the school completely, and the school (i.e. the principal, the PTA, AND the teachers) went " dirty " with mass media involved " proving " how bad the child was, instead of simply installing all the services he needed... his (distortedly told) story was all over the newspapers, radio and TV here. you can imagine our feelings! and we could not respond unless we were willing to expose him, which we did not. I thought of homeschooling a hundred times since first grade, but in the end we enlisted him in another school where at least they are trying hard to help, if not always successful. Guest guest
Hi Fania, I hope this child can find some better solution, too. I can see this either being a wake up call for our school district about needing to provide better services or something that polarizes the whole community. It's not like autistic kids are going to go away. I like your notion of assimilating the NT world into ours instead of vice versa.
Guest guest
..were the parents refusing the one to one aide for a specific reason?
Guest guest
Hi, All I know is what I read in the article - the parents believed the aide, speech, resource room, etc. were making the behaviors worse. They asked for them to be taken away. All I've heard through the grapevine is that people who knew the girl before she started 3rd grade are truly surprised that her behaviors regressed so quickly. Something was happening in the school environment that really set her off. If anyone knows what it was, I don't know, and I'm sure everyone is clamming up now because of the lawsuit. I haven't tried very hard to find out more about it because it's depresses me so much. There's a court proceeding Dec.1 and some school meeting Dec. 2 about it. At this stage it's the school district suing the parents - with our tax dollars.
