Sit down and write up an agenda that lists all the items you feel need to be

discussed and even little notes to keep you on track. Go down the agenda at

the meeting if you steer the meeting and if they do, cross off what is c

overed and when they are done, bring up the items that they didn't cover.

I saw a form online somewhere that was nice...it has a box for " Parent wants "

" Schools response. " or do your own outline - whatever will work for you. I

just jot down a list on regular paper or print one up from my computer.

<<Then, this am I spoke to the sped teacher and he doesn't qualify for the

intensive programs (2 1/2 hr day) because he tested so high!  Btw, she did

mention in her report that his ability in the classroom setting (not test

setting) was lower.  She said there are a lot of kids that are testing below

the state standard of 7% (I have to confirm that somehow) and that is what

those intensive classes are for.

>>

As with everything you are told, you want to verify it in writing with the

appropriate printed material. Ask to see the guidelines in writing for

qualifying for this program. It could be that the 7% is someone's idea and

not an actual rule. Find out.

Ask to see your child's scores - all of them. You know with test scores,

sometimes they are simply averaged to come up with one base number. The

subtest scores however, may be vary different from each other. You know a

child could be doing below average work in one class, above average in

another class and get a middle of the road grade average. That average does

not represent an accurate picture at all. So look at his scores and also ask

to see the scores in age equivalents so you can understand them.

<< I made mention that I wanted him in a

particular classroom and she said that class may be for higher functioning

kids, but didn't know for sure.

>>

Good, since your kid is higher functioning, sounds like the right class.

Visit the classroom and look at the kids and the activities and then decide

what you think knowing what you know about your child. Observe other

classrooms that you feel they will recommend and take notes. Then you will

know what to talk about.

<<but this am when

she said he really doesn't qualify for the sped preschool class that just

confirmed it.  Now grant it, the school psych report is not in yet, so maybe

that will persuade them.

>>

I'm not sure what kind of classroom this is but if it's for kids with special

needs, then she cannot make that decision unilaterally. It must be a " TEAM "

decision and you are part of that team. In addition, the team has to

consider more than just one test score or one kind of test to make this

decision. They must consider a variety of factors. What you want to do is

arm yourself with reasons why this is appropriate for you child using

reports, recommendations, comments from any teachers he's had before, etc.

<< know I will

calm down in a bit, so please know that this is just me venting and I REALLY

appreciate being able to do so with you guys.  Thanks....

>>

You're welcome! Sorry to hear that the advocate bailed on you. I've heard

of that happening before here in my area and it surely is upsetting. But try

to relax and assemble your paperwork. The more prepared you are, the better

you will do. Also, I like to think of reasons they will deny things and then

I can come up with arguments in advance so I am prepared. That helps me get

through these things.

BTW, I have two meetings tomorrow. I have one in the morning for my 3 yo to

discuss his IEP. I have one in the early afternoon at the MRDD to discuss my

6 yo who is too smart to be autistic enough, lol. I should be looney by the

time I get done! You are not alone!

Argh! Good luck!

Just HAVE to tell you, Roxanna. I got a call from the SPED dircetor to tell

me that ESY funding for was approved PROVIDED I can get the deposit.

When I asked WHY I was being asked to help, she LAUGHED and said " because

it's not publicized that they will do this. They don't normally offer to pay

for this program. "

The sped director is saying that the other program usually doesn't help pay

for this stuff?

As always, you are a plethera of knowledge and support! Thank you! Good luck

tomorrow and I will be sending good thoughts your way that it works out great

for both of them. What do you have planned for a treat for yourself after

all of this? We both know how important that can be :)

No, Mrs SPED is saying the SCHOOL doesn't usually pay for this program. I'm

not quite sure WHAT she's getting at. I know they have to pay for ESY if

necessary, and it was HER that brought it up. I never heard of this

praticular program. And it was HER words that said he would fall behind if

he DIDN'T have ESY. I have already told her in NO UNCERTAIN TERMS that I

don't have the money.

I see! I was trying to figure out what her point was exactly. Now, does she

realize that the law says the school has to provide ESY at no cost to the

parent? Hmmmmm....

Thank you! I'm having a hard time with the IEP stuff as none of the

educators so far want to be honest, a rare quality at this program. ugh.

AAARRGGHHH!! Oh, Johanna, I would feel as if the wind had been

knocked out of me if that happened to me!!! How frustrating. I read

Roxanna's suggestions and I agree with everything she said. Make

your list of what you want and practice ahead of times presenting

your argument as to why you believe he needs it. And remember,

you're not alone...we're all there with you in spirit.

My take on this is she KNOWS that I know they have to. I think this

" alternative " they are offering is a better solution for him than anything

else, even though there ARE toher alternatives. And that is her, uh,

" motivation " . They are offering to pay a little more for something that is a

better program than anything else they currently have access to.

MY point is this is cheaper if it's effective for him than paying for whole

year alternative ed, which could be our last choice for him. He is getting

progressively worse in is behaviors.
