Guest guest
AWESOME!!!!!! Glad it went over so easy:) We will take those times as much as we can! Congrats! The IEP team will make a note that is already attending a particular school, and that should help. I get to unenroll him from school tomorrow. YAY!! Guest guest
I know. I'm very sorry to have to pull him out of the STARS program. I think that they really do have the best interests of the children at heart. 's been at the new school 3 days, and so far, he loves it. It's so great to see him happy. Guest guest
Thanks everyone! It's such a pleasure to pick him up from school now. I know it's just the first few days, but he comes home saying how much he loves school... It's such a lovely change. Guest guest
Liz? If you don't mind my asking, what school district is in? Not that we can all stampede to your area, but perhaps parents can hold it up as an example of a school system that really works for families. Maybe there's a resource person there that would be willing to talk to resource people in districts that AS parents are struggling with. Just an idea. Oh, and all the best of luck to on his new school!! Please keep us up to date on his news.
Guest guest
, We're in the San Diego Unified School District. I don't think SDUSD is usually any easier to get a nonpublic school placement than anywhere else. We tried once before and were offered the STARS program (a public school program for bright kids with learning disabilities, which our neuropsychologist liked better than our nonpublic placement) instead. I think what made the difference this time was that we had the IEP through the STARS program. They've known for a while, and they really do have his best interests at heart. I've never had them turn down anything I've asked for. When was in 8th grade, I asked for a vision therapy assessment, and boom! Got a vision therapy assessment, and 10 weeks of vision therapy. I know one other family who has a son in a nonpublic placement in San Diego. They had to hire an attorney to get that placement. I think their experience is more typical. Guest guest
Liz, I'm astonished! Really astonished. Before we came overseas last year, we were living in Rancho Bernardo and my Aspie son was at Bernardo Heights Middle School. I'm sure you know that's in the highly touted Poway School district. Liz, they never did one thing for him. I did not have an AS dx at the time, but I did have a Vision Therapy record and a professional eval. for OT. PUSD just brushed me off during the whole 2 years we lived there. It was so frustrating! My son did not have a dx until a couple of months before we moved. The psychologist said " Shame you're moving, because I was going to recommend him for Francis (something? sorry, I forget the name!) Academy. " Honestly, it makes a parent want to cry. > , > We're in the San Diego Unified School District. Guest guest
, I'm not surprised about your experience with Poway Unified. We lived in Poway for 8 years. They were horrible to my daughter, who had an autoimmune disorder and needed special tutoring. And they were more horrible to . They did a terrible evaluation for him, which consisted of an evaluation for ADHD ONLY. They refused to do a full educational evaluation because his grades were so good. I know, I know, they can't do that, but I didn't know that then. So we pulled him out and sent him to a private school, which had its own problems. Eventually, we moved out of Poway and into San Diego, which had better programs for special needs kids. He stayed in the San Diego school district special ed program for 4 years, and it was great. When it stopped working for him, they were great about okaying another program for us. I'm waiting for the sky to fall in. It seems somehow too easy. Liz Malix512 wrote: > Liz, > I'm astonished!
