Guest guest
A couple of days ago I switched my 2.5 yr old NT son over to raw milk. He was getting 8 oz of pasteurized 1% milk at night and about 4 oz of watered juice before nap that I replaced with the raw milk. I've read so many good things, but am fearful that today's events were linked to the raw milk. Starting yesterday he was painfully constipated and nothing came out. We gave him a dose of senokot at night. Unfortunately for about a good 6-12 months we were having to give him it to keep him regular, but the last 4 months or so he's been OK. When nothing happened this morning, my husband gave him another dose of senokot. Still nothing at lunch, so he gave him another one today which put him at the daily max, AND he also gave him motrine to help with the discomfort. I know this sounds like a lot, but believe me for those of you that can relate to a child being constipated and needing " assistance " to get it out, it is mortifying. Well after his nap he started with throwing up; followed by a constipated poop coming out; then diarrhea all over-twice; and when I came home from work he opened the door and threw up again. Then was totally fine the rest of the night. Slim chance it could be the flu but an doubtful. Will know soon enough, because stay-at-home hubby was the lucky recipient to most of his explosions today and if it's the flu will certainly get it! I could see the explosions being linked to the medicine maybe, but unfortunately have to think the initial constipation was linked to the raw milk. However everything I've seen regarding constipation just talked about how pasteurized milk constipates. Is there a change that switching to raw with all the extra fat and all could have been to big of a change too fast? I really want to make this work. Anyone have to phase it in? Thanks, Kari Re: Raw Milk Thanks , There were some nagging questions about the events leading up to my son's autism that inspired me to study early gut development. My son was only breastfed for a couple of weeks before I retuned to work and I started him on powdered infant formula. A wonderful source of information on infant formula and how to restore a balance of healthy flora can be found at Dr.Mercola's site. http://mercola.com/index.htm Just search his site for raw milk, infant formula, or kefir. Guest guest
Kari, Throwing up is a bad sign, and I would throw that milk away, just to be on the safe side. We drank raw milk for several weeks before we gave it to our son, even then I fermented it with kefir grains first. Know your source of raw milk, look and see if this dairy farm has ever been in trouble before, how long have they maintained a Grade A status, could it be possible that the milk got contaminated accidentally, stray away from using plastic with raw milk, we should all do that with pasteurized milk too. Raw milk never caused constipation with us, however, when my son started middle school with a public bathroom be started withholding his bowelmovements, and that is where he got into trouble. I tried everything to clear him up, such as citrate of magnesia, miralax, lactulose, you name it we tried it. Well my father had a bout with clostridia and he had been on antibiotics but it kept returning. I suggested giving him raw milk and fermented milk and while it seemed to help some, it wasn't going away. My mother purchased Benefiber and started him on that, and you know the clostridia hasn't returned. As a last resort, I decided to give benefiber to my son to see if that would clear up the constipation, and to my surprise it seems to have worked. Kari, You might want to try introducing the raw milk more slowly - you could mix it in with pasterized milk over a few days, increasing the raw milk daily. This is what is recommended when infants switch formulas. Raw milk is so different than pasterized - all of those enzymes and good bacteria. It might have just been a shock to his system. BTW, we drank Organic Pastures raw milk as a family for 1 year (until we moved out of state) - it was wonderful and we dearly miss it!
