Guest guest
Mambo mambo, Unfortunately one gram (1,000 mg) of sodium is in about 1/3 teaspoon of salt. Most boxes of salt give 1/4 t. as 590 mg of sodium. For those of us who want to lower our blood pressure and are trying to get most of our calcium from vegetables, training our taste buds to be OK w 500 mg of sodium per day can be about as daunting as restricting calories. My buds are gradually adapting. I have cut the salt I used to cook rice with (2 C dry) from 1 t. to 1/2 t. to 1/4 t. At each level it has taken me about a month for the rice to taste " normal " . Soon I will go to zero salt (for the rice). Some foods surprise me: oats seem to taste fine w/o salt. There are several studies showing that it takes about 4 months for taste buds to adapt to a low salt, low fat, low sugar diet. The problem then, of course, is that what most others eat then tastes intolerably salty, sweet and rich! S Pollock MM wrote: By the way, how much is one gram of salt?
