Probably the reason Tide cleans so well is because it has all those lovely chemicals in there. Anyone remember the old detergent commercials where they used to advertise, " Now contains active enzymes!!! After the babies came along, we switched to Dreft. The minor rashes my husband still had went away completely. We have now switched to more enviro type laudry detergents - I haven't really found a brand that is better than another - but none seem to cause skin reactions in the family. Currently we are using the Trader Joe's brand (of laundry detergent AND dish soap) - and we aren't having any related skin problems.Trader Joe's brand is definately the cheapest I have found - in fact we try to shop there as much as possible, then go the the health food store more occasionally.This whole foods diet gets expensive!!!!THey seem to be pretty non-toxic, gentle on the environment, etc. We have also dropped bleach (I sometimes use an enviro type, non-chlorine). The only " commercial " product that I still use is a spot treater on the clothes - I figure it is fairly minimal and I haven't noticed skin problems from it. Don't forget to switch your automatic dish washing detergent to an eco brand too - just think of all that chemical residue from the commercial brands! They have a good newsletter - the recent version contained a " pocket guide " to which veggies have the worst and least pesticides - very handy! It's a little bit of an easier sell to my big kids than the less appealing hfs store brands, and also easier on the pocketbook as you said. I'll try their diswasher detergent. Guest guest Posted December 17, 2003 Report Share Posted December 17, 2003 My Tide story... In grad school I developed a strange rash that my doctor said looked like a chemical/allergic rash. I never figured out what it was because I hadn't changed anything and at that time I used the powdered Tide with bleach. When I moved I no longer had a washing machine and so I had to go to the laundry mat. I always used the liquid Tide (with bleach and scented) then. One day I ran out and the neighboring drug store only had the powder.... within a week the rash was back. Since then I've only used liquid laundry detergents and no rash. My husband's childhood friend works for Procter and Gamble and was actually a chemical engineer for TIDE at the time! He said they always change the formula, so that explains my reaction. I gave him all sorts of grief over my experience. By the way, Procter and Gamble makes Dreft too. They make so much stuff it's impossible to keep track...
