I'm trying to treat chronic constipation (encopresis) in my six year old son.

Will those who have used magnesium citrate let me know what kind of dosages they

have used?

Thanks.

I'm having the same problem. I know for an adult, it's 10 ozs...the whole

bottle. It didn't work for me though :(

Now what DID finally work was a bag enema. The kind they give you in the

hospital. You can buy them at some drug stores. I got mine at Medic. It doesn't

come with the solution but I just used warm water.

You can also try children's fleets enemas if the mag citrate doesn't work.

If he's as bad off as I am, your last resort would probably be the bag enema.

Poor thing. I know how he feels!

-I use Kirkman's flavored powder since my daughter won't take pills

of any kind. It seems to work well and she only needs a small amount.

It helped calm her and gave her softer bm's (not soft, just soft

enough so she can go!)

Magnesium works great for constipation in my family. Maybe this

doctor does not know much about supplements, and only prescribes what

he is comfortable with? Or reasons related to money?

My son accidently found magnesium worked for him by eating a whole packet of

Atkins diet peppermints and then in the night his bowels emptied fully

(first time for 12.5 years!!!!!) and since then the encopresis has not been

a problem. He has some mints regularily and it works well for us. Such a

relief after so many years of soiling.

when I read

others recommending it so?

That is what I would like to know. I would have asked, and you might

want to do so. Ask what is this based on and what does he have for

references on it. Your view is the exactly the one I had after 2

years at the Children's Hospital: We have been here, and paid, for 2

years and tried every little thing they suggested but my sons were

not better. So it isn't working. If it hasn't worked in 2 years, what

makes anyone think it will work tomorrow? Time to try something

different.

You doc has already tried 'the hard stuff'. Why not try magnesium

citrate or other form of magnesium?

Plus, it does sound like encopresis to me (having lived through

that). Here is the encopresis program:

http://www.enzymestuff.com/rtencopresis.htm

It isn't expensive, just needs some management. The trick is not to

get lazy and keep them on the potty schedule for the full 5-6,

months. My son finally got his bowels in order after this. If your

child isn't as severe, you might not need that long. We used

magnesium citrate the entire time (as the product Natural Calm). I

finally found this program after years of going to the

gastroenterologist and hunting for what was wrong.
