Guest guest
Hi a and all Thanks for the info. I have heard of sensory integration dysfunction and aspergers syndrome. I think Carly's doc is still watching and observing. She still leans more toward OCD but since you are on this list maybe your child has both and maybe this is another common co-morbidity? I would love some more info. I have an appointment with Carly's doc on Fri and would love to have some informed questions formulated. Recently Carly has definitely been demonstrating what I think are SI symptoms. She covers her eyes in order to join her ballet class and covers her ears in order to join her swim class. She's also been walking into walls often and whatever else is in her path as she just seems to get lost. She prefers " baby money " to play with over her dolls a good deal of the time and also " baby leaves " . These things concern me only in their potential diagnostic value not because they cause severe life problems. I sometimes become concerned that we are treating her problems with clothing as OCD and often wonder if it is SI, would the treatment be different and am I possibly harming Carly by taking the wrong approach. It is so hard to figure it out when they are so young. Even harder to be patient and have faith that in time we will figure it out and it will be OK. Thanks for your post and any further info that you can share. - Aloha Robin

Robin, My son has multiple dx's plus sensory integration issues. The best way to find out if SI is an issue is to ask the doctor for a prescription (or a referral, depending on your health plan) for an Occupational Therapy evaluation, and then find an OT who is certified in SI to do the eval. My son is currently getting OT for poor muscle tone as well as SI issues. In my experience, SI problems often accompany neurobiological disorders like OCD, ADHD, Tourette, etc. I think it is unusual for SI problems to be the only dx. But the therapy that the certified OTs and/or PTs do can help the child become more comfortable. My nephew has also benefitted from SI therapy as well as Ritalin for his ADD and behavior therapy for his trichtillomania. Sometimes addressing the child's problems from several angles helps more than trying to pin down one dx. Fran
Guest guest
Robin, Hello, I think I have emailed you before about my daughter. I have a 7yr old daughter whose major symptom is also with clothing. She was diagnosed with ocd at 3yrs old. She is on 40mg prozac for now. It has taken the edge off some, but no significant improvement with clothing yet. We have an appt with an occupational therapist who does tactile defensiveness (I assume the same thing as sensory integration) therapy, next week. It will actually be an evaluation. I told them that I wasn't sure if it would help her. Our doctor wants to try. I figure it can't hurt to try & maybe it will be helpful. My daugther does have other issues besides clothing that just seem like pure ocd, so I'm not sure if this type of therapy will be right for her. I will post another email after our appt. I hope she won't argue about going to the appt. Over the past year she has not wanted to see any doctor about her ocd. Just thought I would share this info. Let me know if you know anything else about this kind of therapy. Thanks, Wanda in GA
Guest guest
Hi Wanda, Got the picture of Meghan she is beautiful! e wrote back ( had her mom write what she told her).It helps e allot to see other children who have OCD.Hope she gets some help from the OT .Let me know if it helps.I did the brushing with e and so did my friend Kay w/ ,it didn't seen to help them.I think it's the ocd and that E & RT is what helps ,but it so hard to e doing it.I'll just have to try.I'm trusting God that she'll be ready when school starts. Love to all, Beth. Re: SI > From: Swmbrown@... > > Robin, > Hello, I think I have emailed you before about my daughter. I have a 7yr old > daughter whose major symptom is also with clothing.
