Guest guest
Thanks to the incredible information from this group and AutismDiet group we have found an outstanding environmental physician who has performed the necessary lab tests to determine my son's delays are biologically based. I want to thank all of you who have shared your stories and information and given me what I needed to research and become an advocate for my son. Although my son is not ASD there were too many commonalities with his behavior and delays that coincided with what parents were reporting here. Issues are delayed speech, poor articulation, emotional outbursts, high activity level, picky eater prefering carbs and dairy, red ring around anus, and sensory issues. Josh (5.5 years) has been in the course of various treatments for 3 years. We started with speech therapy and concurrent occupational therapy for Sensory Integration dysfunction. He improved with OT but did not make the full recovery for which we had hoped. After finding this site two years ago, I was convinced that his issues were related to his digestive system. When I suggested this to his pediatrician she thought I was crazy. I waited 10 months and approached another pediatrician in the group who thought Josh needed an education evaluation and oh, dont forget he needs his vaccines! Shari I then searched the DAN website to find a practitioner who would at least consider there may be a digestive connection. In January our prayers were answered. We have to drive 2.5 hours to reach our MD but it is worth it. Working with him we have found that Josh has yeast and bacteria issues in his gut, ineffective digestive enzymes, milk allergy, high levels of tin, aluminum, and uranium and severely deficient amino acids. Although by looking at him you would not know it, my poor son has malnutrition. Over the course of the last three months we have removed dairy, added enzymes, increased B6, a month on Culturelle. In just three days I have noticed a huge change by adding the Amino Acids to his diet. After we boost these in his system, we will start chelation. I am sharing this so that some of you lurkers out there who think your child may be suffering from some of the issues posted on this group, please do what you can to investigate. My son is on the edge. His developmental delays are not significant to warrant additional help from the school district, yet he is not performing at the level of his peers. My fear is that he was going to get pidgeoned holed with ADD or ADHD and medication would be recommended. Luckily, we have found the cause of this issues and I am so hopeful that things are turning around. If nothing else, Josh should feel better after we complete our treatment. Again, thanks to all or you have shared your stories. And to those of you who suspect a biological base to your child's difficulties, follow your gut. (Pun!) Guest guest
In response to Shari Lyon's post: My daughter sounds very much like your son. I would say that your child, as well as my child, falls on the SPECTRUM. My daughter is far to the end of it, too. She is gifted, so she is well ahead academically and musically. She is just on her last day of Round 16 of her chelation and chelation has helped. The gut issues were a big thing to overcome. She is much better in the last 2 years since we have hit hard on diet, allergies, supplements, enzymes, and pro-biotics. She was always early in anything related to speech or vocabulary, but she had the Sensory Integration Issues, Auditory Processing Issues (sound sensitivity that was awful), as well as the behavior issues. No one would ever call her ADD or ADHD, but she didn't have the focus she has now. You are doing all the right things. The good news is that your child will do well, I believe. Good luck, in Salt Lake City
