Guest guest
-. > Any ideas on how to increase gastric acidity and/or improve protein > digestion? > All suggestions welcome. ***This is going to be so minor - compared to what other more " been around the block " parents on this list can offer -- but I have been looking into the low stomach acid thing because that might apply to my son. Anyway - a " home remedy " is to drink 1 tbl. of lemon juice or vingear (yuck) before a meal . This is supposed to stimulate HCL production. However, I have read that enzymes are supposed to be very effective for this also. -

Guest guest
What about pancreatic enzymes?
Guest guest
A dumb one, perhaps, but I was told to give a little lemon juice with each meal.....such a meagre response --- feel free to delete without compunction! Marti
Guest guest
We give SuperDigestaway by Soleray with each meal. It does the trick. It has HCL plus pancreatic enzymes and a few other things. My tiny 8 year old daughter will belch like a truck driver if we DO NOT give it to her. She has done well with these capsules for about 2 years now. I hope that once all the mercury is out it won't be necessary.
Guest guest
What are the signs of low acidity? Burping? Anything else? sorry, so stupid this question...
Guest guest
>>>Re the low gastric acid I know Betaine HCL (TMG) is often recommended but my daughter does badly on this. Any ideas on how to increase gastric acidity and/or improve protein digestion? Betaine HCL is NOT the same as betaine or HCL...but I don't remember which is which. Just it is not the same. I don't believe digestive enzymes increase gastric acidity. The advantage of plant enzymes is that they simply ignore stomach acid content completely (pancreatic enzymes are destroyed by the acid) plus the enzymes have much longer to be breaking food down than waiting for the pancreatic ones to kick in. So it is reasonable that although you have been taking enzymes for awhile, your DD is still low on acid. Glad the gut bugs are under control now! . I saw a site on fingernails once that said that curved fingernails was a sign of B-12 deficiency or something. My son's nails definitely grow, then curve around the end of his toes. I know this because they are so hard to clip! marti

It cleared up when I added zinc several months ago. Dana
