Yes, fish oils (high quality no contamination with heavy metals) are generallly preferred if your child can tolerate them and you can get him to take them. This is because it doesn't need help from the body to convert in to useful form. Flax requires an enzyme (not one of Devins LOL) produced by the body to convert it to EPA/DHA I can't remember which, and many of our kids can't make the conversion. I use Eye Q made in UK (tested clean) which is a 4:1 balanced mix of fish and evening primrose oil. www.equazen.com. Frequently recommended fish oils include Kirkman and Nordic brands. The things I would > like to try are: > DMG or TMG ( I do not understand the difference) > >>>Basically, Trimethylglycine (TMG) is Dimethylglycine (DMG) with one more methyl group. The chemical structure of TMG is therefore is actually a glycine molecule holding onto three methyl groups, so like DMG, TMG is considered a " methyl donor " or methyl " bank " . The additional methyl group actually makes TMG a more active methyl donor than DMG which is a benefit in some individuals. TMG can support the formation of methionine by methylating homocysteine. Some of this methionine eventually is converted into SAMe (S-adenosylmthionine), which can help maintain healthy seratonin levels in the body and support mood and well-being. As with DMG, TMG in the body, with the help of a coenzyme of riboflavin, supplies methyl groups which attach to folic acid to form methylene tetrahydrofolate, an important component of many biochemical processes in the body including cellular perception and response. (Cut and paste from Kirkman site) Carnosine >>>Haven't tried it (yet) Super Nu >>>Some find it helpful, Sam hated the taste and it made him hyper If you decide to try this one I would recommend you get a sample size first. The HNI enzymes will be helping your lad digest and absorb the nutrients in his food so high dose supps like this one can be problematic, especially with those sensitive to phenols. Owiwiga Tea (spelling?) >>>Ojibwa - I wasn't very good at brewing this Never got round to trying it on Sam but I switched to the tincture and use it myself. I do feel better since taking it but hard to describe. After a succession of coughs and colds I haven't had one since I've been using the Tea. The tincture is not recommneded for children due to the alcohol content. www.ojibwa.com > GFSE > >>>> Good strong stuff, works well, cheap, tastes YUK! Guest guest
Dana, Thanks for the great advise. I got a chance to read some of your website last night, great information and uplifting stories!! >>>>> NP I don't know what this is.<<<<< I meant No Phenol so NF, good thing I am an accountant and don't have to spell too much LOL. Guest guest
Mandi WOW you know so much!! I can only hope to have so much knowledge on this important topic! Thanks so much for taking the time to answer >>Do you mean Flax<< Yes it is Flax and something else, the owner at the local HFS recommend Comega (I think it is called) with fish oil but I haven't tried it yet. So it TMG basically an improvement over DMG? I will start keeping a journal on the computer so it is easier to compile. I have made some written notes but its not always easy to get a snapshot of the situation. Thanks for letting me be a member of the confused club!! Guest guest
Hello , >>> see so many supplements that work for others that I just don't know which to use. Well, pretty much anything you pull off the shelf will help *some* people... The things that seem to go the farthest and help the most are the epsom salts (which provides magnesium and sulfate), magnesium by itself, and zinc, and perhaps EFAs. My son had a bad reaction to DMG. We tried it twice. The Super Nu Thera is a problem for many so you might want to just try a regular multi-vitamin/mineral and whole-food based if possible. >>Owiwiga Tea (spelling?) This helps with detox and immune system in general I think. The GFSE helps with yeast if that is a problem. No-Fenol is cool for several different reasons. Particularly phenolic foods and yeast. My helps if high ammonia and bacteria are issue. Here is a link to more on No-Fenol: www.enzymestuff.com/nofenolfile.htm >>> Am I just looking for a cure? So what if you are? Most everyone wants their kids to be healthier whether they have 'special needs' or not. At least we want them to be comfortable and not miserable. >>How do you know which things work? I agree with the other replies. I 'learned' my sons'. Look for some indicator or behavior that your son may have. When Older Son feels badly, he starts chewing everything first, then the irritable whining begins, then the headbanging. With Younger Son, he usually resumes being an extremely picky eater, says he is too 'tired' to do anything, flops all over the furniture, and has elimination (stools) problems of some sort. When I start to feel bad, I don't cook...or everything gets burned. Each has particular patterns. >>>What kind of data should I keep? Whatever you find helpful. Some people do a food diary, but I didn't. I would try one supplement each week so I only had one thing to focus on. Usually I knew what was working or not by the third or fourth day. . Guest guest
I don't know the difference between the DMG and TMG, usually people go to the TMG when their children have a problem with the DMG, my son had no such problem so we've been using the DMG since November 2002. The talking that followed was wonderful. We introduced the Ojibwa Tea shortly after, saw some die-off issues, but we've all done really well on the Ojibwa. Talking had less echolalia, and more social aspects to it, and he seemed less overwhelmed by sensory issues. Actually engaged other children at pre-school (initiating games) rather than responding only to direct contact. Too many good things too list, don't want to bore everyone else, I was looking at my prior posts, and they seem way too long. I can e-mail you privately if you want. Super Nu Thera seems to present only problems once the enzymes are started. It usually works for that pre-enzyme period of your life. It would make sense, since the children are absorbing more nutrients from their food, so they don't need the direct supplementation, also their food choices seem to open up on the enzymes, so again vitamin deficiency is less likely to be an issue. Good luck. Supplement question or 2 or 3 Hi Everyone, This is one of those " gee I don't know what to do " questions. I have been reading this board and others for a while and have see so many supplements that work for others that I just don't know which to use. So far is on ZP and Pep and it seems to be helping some, his BMs are not little rabbit pellets anymore and he seems more aware (he started center based ABA at the same time). He is on EFA grain based but I was told that fish based is better. The things I would like to try are: DMG or TMG ( I do not understand the difference) Carnosine Super Nu Owiwiga Tea (spelling?) GFSE NP Am I just looking for a cure? Is it nuts to try to many things? How do you know which things work? What kind of data should I keep? I know this is a lot of questions and I am not trying to start a debate, I just value the input from this list. Thanks in advance!! Kirkman have sample sizes so you don't have too much to give them a try. Some kids react marvellously, others have nasty reactions.
