Guest guest
Socca Oven is in the new gourmet food court a couple of buildings up from Chez Panisse on Shattuck, before you get to Black Oak Books but on the same side of the street. Guest guest
I could not get to the recipe in Sunset – perhaps one has to be a subscriber? But I have made soccas myself after a visit to the Socca Oven. Socca Batter 1 c garbanzo flour 1 c water ½ tsp salt Mix – This should be a batter the consistency of crepe batter. If too thick add more water. If you use it thick the result will be thicker and will not be crispy, but all this is a matter of taste. Pour into greased round cake pan or larger lipped round pan (cake pans make great individual servings if the dough is thin, can be shared by 2 people if thick). Bake on high (400 degrees F or more) until brown and crispy if thin (maybe 10 minutes depending on your oven) , or lower (350 degrees F) until does not cling to knife in the middle if thicker. Top with your choice of seasonings/toppings (pizza ones or leftover meats and veggies or any previously cooked foods and fresh herbs). Slide back in the oven until hot or browned or as you like it. Take out of the pan, top with aioli or mayonnaise or barbeque sauce or what ever fits with the topping. Cut in wedges and eat with a salad. Check the soccaoven.com site for suggestions on toppings. Their menu consists entirely of chickpea flour " pancakes " topped with a wide variety of items-veggies, fish, chicken, even lamb. Everything is gluten, wheat, dairy, yeast and sugar free! I need to take a drive to Berkely... Here's an older article from Sunset with a picture and recipe: http://www.sunset.com/sunset/food/article/0,20633,688054,00.html Yum! --- In , " piglet95037 " <csilverstein@...> wrote: > > Hi and welcome. Guest guest
Thanks to everyone for the warm welcomes and all the ideas! What a huge relief to discover I'm not alone and there are people to talk to about resources / restaurants / etc. I appreciate it so much.Socca Oven is so fabulous, I went there last weekend. The " cheesecake " at Cafe Gratitude right down the street from there is to die for (vegan, raw, dairy-free, wheat-free and soy-free! wow!) I just got SERIOUSLY glutened at Picante last night, which for those who don't know is a really tasty Mexican restaurant in Berkeley.Connie, your suggestions were AWESOME especially since some of those restaurants are places I already love! (for instance, Saysetha). I am loving " I Can Eat That " bread from the freezer section at Berkeley Bowl. I also just discovered a new yummy GF snack at PIedmont Grocery - " Lesser Evil " flavored kettle corn. All natural, GF, and on sale 2 for $5. The cinnamon and peanut-butter/chocolate are really good and they're way lower calorie than most sugary sweets.
Guest guest
Two places my husband and I just ate at over the weekend: Bistro Liaison (call ahead, and be ready with your list of questions, but the staff is very helpful & knowledgeable – they even asked if we wanted bread at the table because of my condition – meaning they assumed not, but just wanted to check) Café Gratitude. ½ block from Bistro Liaison. We went there for dessert because Bistro had just changed their dessert menu, so there was nothing I could eat for dessert (they had mango sorbet, but I HATE mango – with a passion. ALL Café Gratitude’s desserts are GF. They said the only gluten containing thing in their restaurant is a soy based sauce. Other than that they said everything is GF. Our waitress was a fellow celiac. Both places come highly recommended. Lil P.S. Welcome to the list Isaiah! I'm looking forward to trying Socca Oven, thanks to your post. Since you seem to be in the Berkeley area, I thought I would mention that I've enjoyed eating the rice noodles at Slurp, but you might want to ask them about CC issues. Happy GF eating! - > > Hi all, > My name's Isaiah. Guest guest
Ah, cooking on top of the stove and then broiling – another method! The onions would be good too.
