Guest guest
Hello, I have another appointment with my doctor on Wednesday night but he did tell me over the phone today that my thyroid test was abnormal, which I knew of course, BUT, he said it was overactive! Now, this is the second time a doctor told me this but last year I was told it was underactive! So that's twice it was overactive and once it was underactive? I have all of the signs of an underactive thryoid, NOT an overactive thyroid! I am so confused, what does this mean? I have never been treated for this due to medical insurance problems and just recently I was able to get medical insurance again. He is going to send me to an endocronoligist, I am going on vacation on Friday so when I come back some time in August I will be going. I just wanted to know if anyone knows why in the world my blood test said I have an overactive thyroid BUT I have all signs of a underactive thryoid? Exhaustion, weight gain, dry and thinning hair, etc. Thanks Vicki 's Mommy HFA/Mercury Poisoned 8 1/2 years old
Guest guest
Try a google search for " secondary hypothyroidism " or maybe " centrally mediated hypothyroidism " . If the major problem is in the hypothalmus then the TSH can be low, normal or high. Let me know if the endo gets it!!! (mine didn't). > Hello, I have another appointment with my doctor on Wednesday night but he > did tell me over the phone today that my thyroid test was abnormal, which I > knew of course, BUT, he said it was overactive! Guest guest
Hello Vicki, Don't be confused anymore, you are burning out your thyroid --- if your thyroid was a child 1/2 the time they would be screaming running around --the other 1/2 of the time they would be rocking in the corner( I am kind - of kidding here) I am a mom of a 9 year old who is recovering-- and have been down the road you are on with your thyroid... I don't think drawing and testing more TSH levels are the way to go.. Why don't you try a natural supplement or supplements to help with this problem - did you realize that fluoride could be why you are not getting the same results every time you test - It blocks iodine -just cutting out fluoride is going to make you feel better. http://www.iherb.com/thyroid.html I use this product. http://www.iherb.com/thyroid4.html Will you please look up message # 124604 and # 78475 for other ideas. My notes also say that http://thyroid.about.com/ is a good place to do reading. You could be a new women by the time you are back from vacation- I hope this feels right to you? Guest guest
>they said my thyroid was below normal and they want to put me on some pills... The pills will make you feel more human, a bit more awake and aware, less tired. I've been borderline for about 30 years now and my doc refuses to treat me until it hits the point of no return, as they say. >Has anyone else had to take pills for this and do you think it will help my weight loss?? I know many women who are on thyroid replacement, and not once did I hear any of them say it helped boost their weight loss. They were all *hoping* it would, though. > I have another dr appt in about a week and half You may have to have blood work drawn a number of times over the next few months until the doc gets the right dosage for your meds to bring you back into the normal levels. Congrats on getting a diagnosis and treatment. Sue in NJ
Guest guest
, one of my close friends was put on meds for a " mildly underactive " thyroid. It really helped her feel better (a lot less tired), which helped her to get more exercise...so in a round-a-bout way, it did help her lose weight. I hope it helps you feel better! Good luck! -Bonnie > > When I went to the dr about my blood pressue they took some blood and when the results came back they said my thyroid was below normal and they want to put me on some pills... Guest guest
, My thyroid is kaput. Totally hosed. I have been on synthetic thyroid hormone for almost a year. I really cannot tell you the differences. I think I am feeling better overall, sleeping better. But I did not drop a lot of weight after starting the meds. I hope someone else can give a better reply. Guest guest
Thanks for bringing up the question, ladies. I emailed my doctor today to ask him if he tested me for that when I was tested for other things (cholesterol, etc) this past summer... I have been so tired, bordering on exhaustion... I hadn't put the depression into the equation until reading 's response here... anyway, we'll see.... maybe I do, maybe I don't, but I would definately like it ruled out now. ;-) I'm definately not using it as an excuse for being fat, slow metabolism or whatever, I just want it ruled out for the other symptoms/signs... Guest guest
Hi , The meds will help level you out - my daughter was diagnosed in the 9th grade. The meds didn't help her lose weight but it did stop the annual 10 pound gain that she had been going through - doctors only checked her level because I took her in after a counsler wanted to put her on anti depressants (mmm lets see she was 8th grade - in a school she didn't want to go to - her granny and great granny passed within 3 weeks of each other etc) so I wanted a second opinion. I figure they would of never checked because I'm obese - so I'm thankful for that. sorry - I wandered - back now Anyway - I can tell when she needs an adjustment - she gets weepy, tired etc - almost PMS-ey. For the first year they drew her blood every 3 months - then 3 times a year - then twice and we're pretty much down to once a year. I felt so bad for her - she was working out 3 hours a day and doing 1800 calories and was struggling to lose anything. She has been able to finally shed 25 pounds! As a side note - since 3 of my sisters and my daughter all have underactive thyroids - I begged my doctor to test me - turns I'm just fat - LOL <bostonsweety27@...> wrote: When I went to the dr about my blood pressue they took some blood and when the results came back they said my thyroid was below normal and they want to put me on some pills... Guest guest
hang in there! It really is harder for a lot of people with a thyroid problem to lose but it can be done. It seems to me - and I'm sure Sue in NJ will have the answer <GBG> that they changed the numbers on what they considered to be underactive - and now more people are falling into that range - it's late and I can't think straight - off to bed I go LOL. One of the ladies recommended a book in regards to the thyroid - I'll see if I can find the name of it tomorrow - I never did get around to reading it :(ABrite@... wrote: Thanks for bringing up the question, ladies.
