Given a choice, it wouldn't be at the top of my list, but I'm happy enough with it to keep buying it until something better comes along - New Grist perhaps when we can find it on the west coast? There is a listing of gluten free beers at the bottom of the links page here: http://www.bayareaceliacs.org/links.htm Best, -patrick
Guest guest
I wouldn’t EVER try that. The Heineken folks are idiots. BTB, if it’s a Heinie you want, there is a new gluten free beer carried at WF that tastes JUST like a Henie. Which is to say – I hate it. But it *does* taste just like a Heineken. I would say go with that one… It is mad by St. something or other. The bottle doesn’t say gluten free, but is does say it is made from Sorghum and has no wheat or barley… As for a Guinness - *sigh* Just give up on that one… From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of rami keisari Sent: Tuesday, April 13, 2010 9:10 PM Subject: [ ] Gluten free beer Some websites claim Heineken beer to be technically gluten-free since it has less than 0.02% gluten content which is less than the 200 ppm defined by the World Health Organization. Has anybody tried it and see if they have a reaction? I know that " true gluten-free " should be less than 20 ppm. I am able to tolerate codex grade wheat starch which has less than 200 ppm of gluten without obvious symptoms. Would appreciate any feedback. I assume Guinness beer will never be gluten-free, right? Guest guest
I second that. The Dubble Dark is the closest we’ve got, and all the Green’s is very well made and yummy. BevMo sells four Greens. I saw them in a La Jolla Whole Foods, too. They're seriously good artisan-like beers. Guest guest
I actually don't mind Redbridge, totally gluten free. http://www.redbridgebeer.com/about/aboutRedbridge.aspx You can get it at whole foods. Guest guest
I don't know about Heineken but I sure do know about these two. Both at Whole foods. I like the Greens because it comes dark.Ill put the links here so you can see what the bottle look like. cheers! Guest guest
Draegers also carries these, as does the Wine Mine next door to Mariposa Bakery in Oakland. I liked the Redbridge, St. s, and the Greens as well. All sorghum beer tastes a bit weak to me (I miss IPA), but these aren't bad. The St. s and the Greens bottles tend to be pricey but are high quality, and the the Redbridge is affordable since it is Anheuser Busch. Guest guest
It was the St. s I was talking about. Tastes JUST like Heineken. Like EXACTLY. If you like Heineken, you should get it. I tend to go for the darker beers… From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of rio_robbins Sent: Thursday, April 15, 2010 9:05 AM Subject: [ ] Re: Gluten free beer I don't know about Heineken but I sure do know about these two. Guest guest
I've heard a similar rumor about bud light... One of my non-celiac friends was trying to tell me that i could drink it and that her co-worker who is celiac drinks it. I got so annoyed with her because she just wouldnt let it go! Even if there is " no detectable " level of gluten in a hene or bud light- i dont think i would want to eat/drink something so highly processed to the point that it no longer has what it was made from in it anymore. that can't be good. Just my thoughts.. I have tried redbridge, kinda tastes like a sierra nevada. And Green's trippel, both surprised me in being really good. I'll definately stick to those because I know they weren't made from any gluten containing ingredients! I might at some point try to brew some of my own GF beer! > > > I don't know about Heineken but I sure do know about these two. Both at Whole foods.
