Guest guest
, Somehow when I first read this, I missed the summer services connection. ESY services have to be discussed at your annual review--when did you have it, or when is it occuring? I find that administration will not return phone calls/letters when they either: don't have a requested service and don't want to acknowledge it; don't know what they will be doing yet; and have no intention of giving you what you need in any event and hope you will just go away. Have you tried just going into the sped director's office and meeting with her--barging in if need be? If she's not around, try seeing if the superintendent is in. Follow any conversations up with a letter memoralizing what was said. If this goes nowhere, I would email again, your sped director, the superintendent, the state special ed agency, and cc all members of the school board to let them know you are now involving the local educational agency. Although in reality the state may do little, it may look alarming to the school board that parents will involve the state if their own administrators will not respond. Guest guest
I know this is off topic, but I am not sure where to go and I know one of you will know. For a month now I have been trying to get in touch with my son's special ed coordinator at the board of education. Yesterday morning (8:30 am), I faxed a letter to her and copied the superintendent of schools. I have not received a call. All I have wanted to find out are what the options are for my son for placement this summer in order for me to make arrangements with my employer. Who can I go to next? Thanks. -
Guest guest
Hi , I have had a great deal of experience in the past year with my daughters " team " this past year that has taught me that it is very worthwhile to work with a local autism advocate. They really make sure that THE CHILD is first and foremost in every decision. There are many agencies (I live in Kansas) that will provide free or low cost assistance, and provide you with an advocate. You might start by doing a search on line for someone in your area. In the end I chose to home school, all three of mine. I know many people don't have that as an option, it is really hard for us(financially). All three are doing much better now though. Also, sending a fax was a good idea. I think, however, I would send a letter and have them sign for it. I hate to say it but you may need to document how hard it has been for you to help your son get what he is entitled to. A month is plenty of time for a response from the school. You may just be dealing with some folks who are getting a little lazy at the end of the school year. It is very important to document, document, document, everything. We were even told by an advocate to tape all of our meetings. it is a terrible thing, but the truth is you never know when things might turn ugly. After 6 years it happened to us. And the whole problem this year, started as an end- of- school- year problem from last year. It was awful! My daughter still gets " stuck " on what happened to this day! We waited way to long to find an advocate, and it would have taken months of meetings and trials to straighten it all out. I was always worried about being a team player, on a team that I was never a part of. BIG MISTAKE! An advocate would be a big help to you though, as it will give you some immediate muscle! Stand firm, and expect the BEST for your child! You both deserve it, and furthermore they owe it to you! --- Selavka <stacylynncollins@...> wrote: > I know this is off topic, but I am not sure where to > go and I know one of you will know. > > For a month now I have been trying to get in touch > with my son's special ed coordinator at the board of > education. Guest guest
Maybe you can call the office first and make sure they got your fax (while your at it maybe you could talk to someone). They may not have received it or are trying to get things worked out. Is she still employed with the school district? If that doesn’t work, you can fax them and tell them that if they do not respond to you by (date) that you will need to contact the state dept of ed. My son’s district has spec. ed summer school every summer along with the other districts here. Your school should have that information. Guest guest
Getting an IEP meeting to discuss ESY (extended school year) services should first be directed to his special education teacher that works with him, most times she is the one who is responsible for the bulk of the goals and benchmarks, and responsible for setting up meetings. Then there would be supervisors above her..Special Education Supervisor. If you couldn't get ahold of them. In our county in Knoxville they have a Regional Resource Center (sort of like the school system police) they are suppose to make sure that the school is staying compliant. Call the Dept of Ed. in your county and ask if they have a regional resource center. Explain it has been a month without an answer back. As for your rights as a parent of a special needs child..It would be a good idea to use advocates as a resource. There could be non-for profit dept of ed. funded parents group in your town. Ours here is called STEP (support and training for exceptional parents) Here is the http just so you could see what I mean and find something similar in your area. www.tnstep.org Groups like this are a godsend. Guest guest
When was your last IEP? Was this not discussed and added to it at that time? If you don't get a reply from the fax, I would next send a certified e-mail, return receipt to both of them giving them x amount of days to respond. Does your son get any ESY usually, and if so, when is it usually discussed? My son goes to inclusion camp for ESY for 9 weeks, and school pays for 6 weeks of this. a - Peoria IL -- Selavka <stacylynncollins@...> wrote: I know this is off topic, but I am not sure where to go and I know one of you will know. Guest guest
The school system's attorney. If you kept a log of your calls, you might want to write it down and send it to that attorney. -- Rima Regas Mom to Leah, age 7 (AS, DSI and APD) http://www.sensoryintegrationhelp.com On 5/24/05, Selavka <stacylynncollins@...> wrote: > I know this is off topic, but I am not sure where to go and I know one of > you will know. > > For a month now I have been trying to get in touch with my son's special ed > coordinator at the board of education. Guest guest
If it's likely he would regress (lose skills) without summer school he should be eligible. I would think the teacher would have sent a notice home by now. Does he have an IEP? When is the next meeting scheduled? Have you tried communicating directly with his teacher? Guest guest
Continue to document all of your efforts, the #, time, date, nature of the call, details if you left a message etc.. You can call an IEP meeting at any time. I know when my son was starting kindergarten the school had 60 schools days to respond to my letter and requests.... and it was at the last week when I had to ask if I needed to file a complaint with the state to get a response out of them. (VM) Needless to say that the special ed director contacted me immediately and coordinated the evaluations necessary to get what we needed for school.
