Thought I would chime in on the Indian food thread. My husbnd is from India, so I have become pretty familiar with the food. I'm the one with celiac. It's always good to know the Hindi words for flour, because I have met many people (not just Indian) that don't think white flour is made from wheat! The words you would find used are.....rava (the 'a's pronounced like a short u sound), sooji, or medha. South Indian food is pretty safe....these would be things like dosas and idlis. These are made from fermented rice and lentils. You would need to watch out for a rava dosa, since that would have wheat. I have found one place that adds a small amount of wheat flour to their dosa batter (Das Prakash on Homestead in Santa Clara)....needless to say, I don't go there anymore! The place I have pretty good luck at is Udupi Palace on El Camino in Sunnyvale. They have a great lunch buffet that you can eat most of the stuff on

.. They also bring you one mini-dosa. You will find more wheat (mostly in the bread form) in North Indian food. I have found that I always feel a little "gurgly" after eating at North Indian restaurants, even though I am very careful. I don't know if it's because there is just more wheat in the kitchen and it gets all over.

Let me know if you have any other Indian food questions!

Eileen,The pakora appetizer is great if you ask for it to be fried in separate oil. The papadum (which comes with the meal) is amazing. I like the Miloni Sabzi and the Saag Paneer, but the dishes are always changing - So just choose the dish you like and ask them if it's wheat-free. Chances are the answer will be yes, as very few of the dishes actually have wheat in them (except the breads, obviously). Glad you liked my blog!Isaiah

Isaiah,

I LOVED your blogs. I hope to try the Tzimmes very soon.

Could you recommend some dishes that you like to order at Ajanta that are GF DF and SoyF. I have only had Indian food a few times and would not know what is good to order. I would like to try it some time on a 'date night' with Mike.
