I got home very late last night and had a message on my machine from him. A very important client of ours is coming in today from China and the boss man is inviting everyone to go out on his boat for a " dinner cruise " on Tuesday night. How does one go about informing a very ignorant man about what GF means? I would love to go out on the lake, but this man is very intimidating, and my direct boss is on holidays for the next week! Can you find out what kind of food it is? If it is catered, maybe you could get the name of the caterer and contact them directly. If he's doing the food himself... hmm. I don't know what he's like, but could you ask him about the food? Whether or not you tell him in detail about Celiac is up to you, but you could ask about the menu casually, or if you're really worried about having enough to eat from the menu, offer to help. This is a strategy I've used at say, departmental food gatherings, and it's easier to scout out the food for yourself. Even if you get there thirty minutes early to help " set up " you can read labels etc. (if there is packaged food, dressings etc.) You can always bring food (snack bars etc.) in your purse, although I know that's not much fun. Good luck and I hope you have a good time on your " cruise " ... if the food sucks just concentrate on the beautiful water and weather! Guest guest Posted September 3, 2006 Report Share Posted September 3, 2006 I would say bring your own food, just in case. I would also call him, and explain that you have food allergies. You don’t need to go into it too much, but you could ask what is on the menu so that you can bring something similar. (Like if they will be having beer, you could pick up some GF beer, or if they will be having sandwiches, you could pack a sandwich.) Funny thing is, last time I went out on a boat with someone I barely knew and brought my GF sandwiches (while everyone else got stuff at a nearby deli), it turns out the guy’s mom had CD and he knew all about it. I’m not saying that will be the case here, but you never know. I would say however, that if the important client is from out of the country (and, especially a country in Asia), you want the food you bring to be as similar to the food everyone else is eating or it might be considered a slight. Maybe just like you have a food allergy to a protein in bread and wheat products which is tricky to deal with because it's found in a surprising number of places such as food additives. Also that it is very sensitive, that even microscopic amounts bother some people.
