It certainly would interrupt it, but would be interested in knowing if it would reduce the scripting over a period of time. I was just going to ask if anyone had ideas for scripting. A friend's son has just started doing it after not doing it for awhile. Seems like there were supplements that helped? Nell
Guest guest
We have used this method also for scripting. And it does break the script from a nonsense script to an exchange in conversation. One thing that has been very effective is to get into the script especially if it is a topic of interest. Join in to draw out functional language. This acts as a form of redirection. Use it like a game ask Q's about the scripted scene, and that breaks up the repetitive script to a spontaneous exchange in communication. Many other things can be done to reduce scripting to functional language autho when you had a child who didn't speak it is a joy to hear them talk and if they put it into real situations it shows a form of humor peeking through. I get in trouble here when I mention the techniques that involve VB/ABA as it related to the child's stimulus and environment. Many people mistake me from suggesting it is not a biomedical issue. One thing that I will say is you need to look what is being scripted a video a book and determine if that in it self needs to be reduced also changed and rotated offering replacements etc…. My son learned how to talk and read from books, but it also was his stim of choice. Btw you can teach language using stims and videos. Videos of course he would watch all day. So we limit it to about ½ to 1 hour on a good day. And when we see behavior such as over scripting of hyperactivity etc… we reduce the amounts. And also switch the selections often that he does not get over stimulated on. (We reduce the dose and frequency) At one point I had had it and took away almost everything Lol that was not real, (cartoons) But of course with 2 other children and the library the invintory came back to the norm. Ps I still have over 30 videos confiscated. I guess when I return them I will have some powerful reinforcers. Videos are like candy in our house since he doesn't get candy the videos are a treat and great for bribery. Guest guest
My son would do verbal scripting continously until I gave him ATP sublingual from Labs. It comes in 20mgs. I used to give him a whole at age 4. Now at age 6 he only takes 1/4 tablet and not every day. You may want to start the dosage slowly.. too much will cause hyperactitivty (at least it did for my son). The first time I gave it to him him stopped scripting in about 20 min. or so. It was amazing. Good luck, Marilyn > > Kenny's redirection technique described in his text below is also > reported to be useful for those kids who do verbal scripting (recite > videos spontaneously or in response to a question)! > > > > I never tried it, was researching it for a woman who's child > scripted, but would be interested if it would work if consistently > applied, that is, would it reduce the scripting? Guest guest
My son also learned to talk from reading and scripting. He literally was obsessed with books from the day he could walk. He still is at 9! He also had a Leap Frog phonics bus that he became obsessed with at 1-1/2. I had to limit the amount of time he was allowed to play with it, because he could sit for hours. Later, around 2 I would find him repeating the bus; A says Ah, etc. He would do the whole thing! He also would memorize the books I read to him. Little did I know by 3 he could read! I know it was the hours of looking at books, and the scripting of the phonics bus that taught him how to read. Today he does it here and there, but he usually uses phrases correctly. Once in awhile he will say some off the wall pharse that makes no sense, and I just tell him he makes no sense. We correct him, and the next time he uses the pharse appropriately. a J My son learned how to talk and read from books, but it also was his > stim of choice. > Btw you can teach language using stims and videos.
