Guest guest
I think it's something about the infant getting an eye infection, without those drops. BS, though. My daughter didn't get them. She *did* get an eye infection, which breastmilk cleared up in less than one day. Pretty powerful stuff!! Jo in FL/VA eyedrops I have been reading about mandatory eye drops. As I said earlier (when I apologised for being a dope) that I have never heard anything about eyedrops. Why are they given???This one has me stumped. Can't imagine any reason why a new born would need eye drops. I would love to hear the excuse on this one!!!!!! Guest guest
Let's wind this discussion up. It started with silver nitrate in eyes to prevent gonorrhea from the moms dirty birth canal - right! Why not just test the mom? Too easy and couldn't make $$ off of AgNO3. Now have gone to antibiotic drops, ointments. Still too hard to test mom - and again can't make money off the drops. On to vaccines.......... Guest guest
I think it was this list where someone said all eyedrops have mercury. I have been having really itchy eyes again this spring and was looking at tne ingredients for Opcon-A and I don't see mercury. Is it hidden or not there? INGREDIENTS: D I R E C T I O N S : I N D I C AT I O N S : REV 10/98 (ACTIVE) pheniramine maleate (0.315%), naphazoline hydrochloride (0.02675%). (INACTIVE) hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (0.5%), sodium chloride and purified water with a boric acid and sodium borate buffer system preserved with benzalkonium chloride (0.01%) and edetate disodium (0.1%). The solution has a pH of 5.5-6.3 and a tonicity of 270-335 mOsm/Kg. Lila White -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Anti-Virus. Guest guest
Some eye drops contain thimerosal, not all. This one appears not to contain any. Guest guest
I don't see any mercury in there, but I might be a little concerned about some of the other ingredients - like boric acid & benzalkonium chloride. http://rxcarecanada.com/Alocril.asp Contraindications: Known hypersensitivity to nedocromil, disodium edetate or benzalkonium chloride. Warnings: Patients who use soft contact lenses must not wear them during the treatment period with Alocril ophthalmic solution. Benzalkonium chloride, a constituent of the formulation, may accumulate in soft contact lenses. This preservative, when slowly released, could possibly irritate the cornea. http://www.truestarhealth.com/Notes/2812003.html Are there any side effects or interactions? Boric acid suppositories should not be used during pregnancy. Boric acid is very toxic when taken internally and should also never be used on open wounds. When boric acid enters the body, it can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dermatitis, kidney damage, acute failure of the circulatory system, and even death. In the past, boric acid was used as a topical treatment for infants with diaper rash. However, even in diluted (3%) form it caused significant toxicity and two deaths.4 Therefore, boric acid should not be applied to the skin of infants and small children. In fact, experts in the field have stated, " The minor therapeutic value of this compound, in comparison with its potential as a poison, has led to the general recommendation that it no longer be used as a therapeutic agent. " 5 However, in more recent research, no serious side effects were reported when boric acid was used as a treatment for vaginitis. At the time of writing, there were no well-known drug interactions with boric acid. > I think it was this list where someone said all eyedrops have mercury. Guest guest
Thanks, , etal. Here is what Bausch & Lomb replied - Lila: Thank you for contacting Bausch & Lomb. We are always glad to hear from our consumers and be of assistance whenever possible. Recently, questions have been raised surrounding the safety of Thimerosol, an ingredient used in a variety of eyecare and contact lens care products. Bausch & Lomb used Thimerosol as a preservative, in two of its contact lens care products, Bausch & Lomb® Sterile Preserved Saline Solution and Bausch & Lomb® Sterile Daily Cleaner. Due to a lack of demand, both these products were discontinued in January of 2002. Opcon A does not contain Thimerisol. Bausch & Lomb stands behind the quality and safety of these two products and believes that there was no danger associated with their use, when used as directed. We hope this information is helpful. If we can be of future assistance, please contact us again via the Internet, or call us directly at 1-800-553-5340. Sincerely, Rita Cunningham Bausch & Lomb Consumer Affairs <_Shepard@e...> wrote: > > Some eye drops contain thimerosal, not all. This one appears not to contain any. Guest guest
Due to a lack of demand, > both these products were discontinued in January of 2002. Oh the things these people will say. My best friend had such a terrible reaction to thimerosal in contact lens solution that she nearly had exploratory brain surgery. She had massive headaches, dizziness, her vision was all messed up -- totally non-functional. Luckily her mother said there was no way her daughter was having brain surgery, not even with the top NYC neurosurgeons who wanted to do it, unless the doctors knew there was a tumor. Soon after the surgery was refused another friend warned her about thimerosal in her lens solution, and when she stopped using it, all her problems went away. So yeah, once the word got out, there sure was a lack of demand for those products. Nell
