Normal -- same with STARband. While the manufacturing aims to ensure

a complete helmet, the trim ensures that the ears, shoulders, and

eyes are unobstructed.

I advise against directing them to cut away additional material out

of anticipatory concern about rash and confort, because the skin can

usually acclimate if managed properly. Any of that lost plastic

could be useful against your child's head shape, and while you can re-

pad the inner foam lining, you can't replace the poly shell when it's

gone.

The sideburns, for example, are a very common area for heat rash, but

it's more important in the long run to stabilize void areas in the

front of the helmet, in my experience (left-sided plagio). I've also

read that the saggital suture can become peaked by too large a crown

opening.
