Dear Traci,

Since you can't adjust the helmet it yourself, I guess you mean,

should you take it off until the adjustment. I've mentioned in my

posts a suspicion that Clara's helmet worked against her much of the

time. But no, I wouldn't advise putting that heavy a hand on the

treatment process. The most I've ever done without consulting anyone

is to take the spacer out after an adjustment where obviously too

much foam had been removed, and even that was ill-advised. Rotation

doesn't necessarily imply that the fit is counter-productive, only

that you're losing ground.

If you feel the time has come to whip your ortho into a more

aggressive approach (and it sounds me like it has), suggest padding

some combination of the following: left cheek, left back prominence,

and the right front prominence -- until the helmet is straight *and*

pink spots are seen centered on the prominent points after 10 minutes

at the fitting. (I'm assuming right-sided plagio, since you found

the rightward rotation is undesirable.) Those were the hallmarks of

our most successful adjustments.

Schedule the next adjustment for two weeks, and if they give you

crap, tell them you didn't like waiting four days this time -- you

know parents who get same-day appointments. :) Look for the spots to

disappear within the hour the helmet is off, and altogether after 48

hours. Then, you will KNOW that your child's head shape has, once

again, changed for the better.

Thank you for the suggestion. Our orthotist seems to be fine, just a bit

opinionated, although in Northeast Oklahoma you don't get many options. The one

with helmet experience within 3 hours from where we live rotates among several

branch offices and was somewhere else until Friday. My son's not had any

material removed other than a small amount at the foam seam when it initially

rubbed above his left ear and suspect maybe it is time for soemthing to be

tweaked.

I feel as though we are probably getting good care as I do not think my son's

plagio is severe, but we've never had a scan nor do I really know any

measurements other than his head was 13 cm square at the beginning. In a lot of

ways it has probably saved me a great deal of panic to be able to tell myself

his head LOOKS better and thus is better.
