what to prepare for...

Hi, I haven't posted in months which is a good sign because for one I've been

quite busy with kids/job, etc...and also I've been feeling good.

I'm starting my 9th month of pregnancy now and am almost hitting the 1yr

anniversary of starting this diet with strict adherence! I have to say, I have

no idea how I got through pregnancy on this diet with all my cravings especially

for real pizza during my 1st trimester!!! One of the hardest things I've ever

done!

Anyway, I'm defnitely planning on adhering to diet for several months after baby

although I am nervous how I'll have enough milk to breastfeed baby. I don't like

most baked good and am not a big almond flour fan...still craving a good

chocolate bobka and chocolate chip cookies the good ole way, I have to admit!

My question is for Marilyn or those of you SCDers who know about weaning off the

diet...First of all what foods are ok to start with and see how you tolerate

them? Second of all, although I've never had a flare up during the year, there

were times (several months ago and in the beginning) when I felt areas of

tenderness or bloating on my abdomen and initially cat scans showed I had

inflammation of my ilium around 14 months ago... I never received a conclusive

diagnosis but they said possibly crohns disease. My question is...is that

considered " symptoms " ? More specifically, do I have to remain on diet for full

year past those last feelings I described or are symptoms referring to a full

blown flare up or diahrea or constipation issues cuz my BMs have for the most

part been fine and not more than 1 or 2 a day.

I hope this is not just one long run on sentence but have these questions on my

mind...Thank you for taking time to read this and pls let me know if you have

any advice..Becky

Yep, it is hard, I'm told. But congrats on accomplishing

it!

TO be honest, for my sweet stuff, I like pecan flour better. I can mix it

with dates and vanilla and cocoa butter and get an almost chocolate. (And

yes, I will post the recipe, but I need to make it one more time to be

sure of my amounts!)

Be careful that it isn't the bad bacteria craving that stuff!

Be aware that after your baby is born, you're going to have a whole

slough of hormonal shifts and stresses you can't even imagine at this

time. Everyone think's they're emotionally prepared, and my observation

is that they aren't!

This is going to cause gut issues, most likely. My personal opinion would

be to stay strict (I know, that isn't what you wanted to hear!) the whole

time you are nursing. For one thing, this will give your baby optimum

nutrition, and a great start with proper gut bacteria, especially if you

are doing SCD yogurt. For another, I'd seriously look at starting Baby's

First Food as something other than grains -- cooked mashed fruit, or

veggies, perhaps.

Given that pregnancy causes hormonal shifts which can affect your gut,

and given that you have been pregnant for most of this last year, yes, I

would stay strict SCD for at least another year.

Then I would look at moving in the direction of a Weston A. Price and

Nourishing Traditions kind of diet, which, in its own way, is as

complicated as SCD.

No matter where I move as far as my diet is concerned, I will never go

back to grains. Given that I live in the Land of Rice, rice would

seem to be a logical thing to add in, and yet... I remember that although

Elaine's daughter now (40 years later) eats about 80% SCD and 20% other,

any time she added rice, she became symptomatic.

I might consider potatoes occasionally. My niece did SCD strictly for two

years, and then, after her two boys were born and she was busier than a

bird dog during hunting season, she moved more towards a gluten free diet

with as little starch as she could manage.

Primarily, I allow myself things that are easier -- and I'm a bit less

rigid when I eat out, because the cross-contamination isn't as much of an

issue these days.
