Contradicting opinions

Abby went the GI doctor yesterday. She has not seen her for a

year. In that year on her scales she gained almost 3 pounds and 2

1/2 inches. That was great. I told her some of my concerns with

the tube feedings and Abby not tolerating them very well. I also

told her what the genetics/developmental peds doctor said about

increading the amount of feedings from 4 cans per day to 8 cans per

day by March. This GI doctor about had a heart attack when I told

her this. She does not see how we even can get 4 cans in

her...well, we don't, we try but it does not always work out like

that. The GI said that Abby is proportionate height for weight and

she is not concerned with her weight gain or height growth. GI

recommendations is treat Abby for delayed emptying of the stomach

and 2 cans of formula through the tube a day. She believes the

medicine for delayed emptying of the stomach will do Abby wonders

and then we can consider increasing the cans of formula.

How does this sound to you all? What are your opinions? What have

your experiences been with this?

Thanks for the help!!

Amy - Sounds like Abby is doing well. It's hard for me to make any

suggestions/comments/opinions at this point without knowing what her

height/weight actually is and what type of formula she is getting

and what the caloric requirement is for her. I think that's the

type of information that would be helpful overall. Does that make

sense? Our nutritionist, GI, Endo and Ped all made the decision on

what Ian's requirements were. Ian gets approx 1000 calories per day

thru the ng tube(this includes overnight feeds) - and this was based

on height and weight. He is now 22 lbs and 89 cm (if I remember

correctly). His nutren is 250 ml per can. He gets 360 ml at night,

and then 4 bolus' of 180 ml during the day (although - I've changed

that myself a bit because he has been " eating food " at lunch and

dinner and he's back to drinking his Nutren as well). Let me know

if this helps - feel free to e-mail me privately if you want to chat

further!

Hugs.
