Thanks Dyane,

I have suffered the battle of the bulge all my adult life and was not even a skinny kid. I have always been 20-30-40 lbs over my ideal weight range. Its that darn German stock in me.

I have dieted on and off throughout the years, lost it, gained it back, and basically never maintained a healthy weight for very long. Now my life depends on my losing weight! How ironic is that the one area of my life that is the most difficult for me to change and I've got to face it head-on! I'm 40 lbs overweight right now which is considered obese. What a disgusting term that is! I know I can't control this disease raging inside me, but I can control and change my eating habits and so I'm going to war. I hope I win!

Sorry your DCLO went down, I know how you feel, I went from 55% to 38% in one year, scared the sh*t out of me. That is when I went on the pred and still at 38% this year. I know my weight is a BIG issue but sometimes I get so PISSED that I have been fighting my weight all my life and now that I have a terminal disease I STILL CAN'T EAT WHAT I WANT! Sorry for shouting I was late to work because I couldn't stop coughing and I'm just overworked, underpaid and feeling poopy. LOL Think I'll go eat some worms HA! Don't worry about uping the 02 Whatever makes you feel better!

ps I'm back to NSIP since Dr. Solomon said even though the HRCT shows UIP pattern with the autoimmune stuff its NSIP. Yea!

and Dyane,

The entire weight issue really sucks! Just like you guys my wieght has been a

life long issue. I've been stuck at 200 lbs for over a year now. For the most

part we probably have the same yo yo, roller coaster dieting stories.

Unfortunately for us PFer's our weight can stand in the way of transplant. I

have 30 lbs to lose before I can be evaluated for transplant and 55 before I

could be listed.

My PCP and Pulmo have been very supportive of all the dieting. I think my PCP

kind of gave up on my weightloss efforts. She suggested surgery (gastric

banding.) I'm having surgery next Monday. In the mean time I'm on a pre-op diet

of protein shakes, fruit and veggies. Thankfully both Humana and Medicare

approved the surgery and I will have no out of pocket expense. In the begining I

felt like I had taken the easy way out. Now that I've had the nutrition classes

and am doing the pre-op diet I see how much work is really involved.

I'm sure you will win this battle! Best of luck to you and know that we're here

when you need us!

My turn to " weigh in " on this topic! sorry, couldn't resist the really bad pun!

Been off for the holidays, so just getting back, and caught up on the 21 digests

from Breathe-Support!!!

Anyway, (any " weigh " ??) I too had to deal with the weight issue when it came to

being eligible for a transplant. I was at 325 lbs and needed to get to 280.

Working with a nutritionist, changing my eating habits, and increasing my

exercise I was able to get down to around 300, but then hit a plateau. I was

stuck on that plateau for quite awhile, with no outlook of getting off of it. I

really couldn't change my eating habits anymore and because of the PF,

increasing exercise wasn't really feasible either.

After consulting with my pulmodude, he referred me to a diet program thru the

health promotions department at the hospital that is a physician supervised

liquid diet. The program is normally for those that are clinically obese and

need to lose 80 pounds or more. Participants are put on 5 specially formulated

shakes per day, alog with an increased intake of water. Normally people are on

the program as long as needed in order to get the weight down. In my case,

rather than months, we were aiming at around 5 weeks, predicated on a loss of

around 4-5 pounds per week. It actually turne out that I was on the full diet

program for 5 weeks, at which point I was under he 280 and was able to

transition off of the full program and onto maintenance. I still need to lose

more in order to get down to a desireable BMI, but I am now below the threshold

that was established for me to be listed. I was listed on Oct, 19th. My weight

is currently down at 268 - I even managed to lose a pound over the past week!!!

I have 2 meals a day, then 2 or 3 or the special shakes.

It can be done...and it is amazing how much incentive there is involved when

your life and well-being are at stake!!!

I'd be glad to answer any questions from anyone in a similar situation.
