A Dr. Baker who does bariantic surgery in Minnesota followed the b-12

levels of his patients who took it orally and who took shots. He found

that taking it orally produced better results. The shots caused lots of

peaks and valleys and left the patient nearly depleted by the time of

the next shot.

The numbers were not mentioned in the email. They are immaterial

though. If the oral dosage got better results, then it does not matter

what the actual results were. Oral is better.

Not the numbers in the study. I meant HER numbers.

She can do a personal study of one, her own self and see which works

for her. Where WAS she, where IS she, what is the trend?

Personally, I'm not taking the subs. I'm not good at anything that

must be " tasted " , liquid, lozenge or chewable. I'm not wild about

needles, but I can do that on a regular basis. I do them weekly, but

I'd not advise that for anyone else, unless they have need. I am

addressing other issues with it, under the care of more than one doc.

When 3 tell you to go to 1/wk, you do. Have been doing it over a year

and my numbers are very reasonable. Not even " high " .

What does " labs seem good " mean? Did you start at 1200 but dropped

to 400, which is still in range? Are you holding steady at 600? I

had a friend who's bottom dropped out after about 6 years and she

ended up with pernicious anemia and neurological problems that will

not leave her for the rest of her life?

This is only true if the person is able to absorb the B12 orally, which many

of us have found that we can't. If someone is unable to absorb the B12

orally, that kinda shoots this theory to hell, now doesn't it? I can take a

ton of B12 (and did) and my level won't (and didn't) go anywhere but down.

The only way that I am able to keep my B12 where it should be is shots.

My doctor doesn't advocate additional B-12; just what we get from our

multi-vitamins. But even pre-op I've had poor circulation and constantly suffer

from

cold hands and feet. My B-12 levels are in the low normal range. I wonder

if starting to take B-12 injections will help? If I start them, how soon

will I notice a difference?

Ray,

Dr. Baker didn't follow ME. I took high-quality B-12 sublinguals,

32,000% RDA, DAILY for 18 months after my RNY. In that time, my serum

B-12 dropped from my natural pre-op 1151 to 118, completely into

full-blown pernicious anemia with some minor neurological damage. Now I

do my shots every other week, and have peaks and valleys that run

between 2000 and 600. You know what, 600 is the lowest level that I feel

good, so every two weeks, I give myself a shot. The people who are

nearly depleted by the time they get their next shot are simply not

getting shots often enough. Duh. A 30-dose vial of the vitamin retails

for about $6, and needles run 25 cents each at my pharmacy, so you're

talking about a 35-50 cent investment in feeling great.

I honestly wish that EVERY post-op was taught how to give themselves

B-12 shots every two weeks for the rest of their lives. It would save a

lot of grief and frustration, not to mention permanent neurological

damage. But that wouldn't make the docs much money. Oh well. I honestly

think that only people who are at risk of IV drug abuse if they have

needles around, or people who are afraid of giving themselves shots,

should be put on sublinguals.

, we are all so different aren't we - my B12 was 19K on sublinguals

so there is absolutely no reason for me to take the injections. As an RN

shots don't bother me in the least and I am quite happy to avoid peaks

and valleys since my B-12 is high, in fact, I have dropped from daily to

2x a week in an effort to bring it down some.

I'm with you on the tasted stuff and because my numbers were so low (below

300) and I was feeling so crappy, I FINALLY convinced my VERY hard headed

family practice Doc into weekly shots for awhile. I " INFORMED " him that I

wanted to see MY numbers up in the 1200 range. When he went bug eyed over

that, I informed him that not everyone is the same and what makes ONE person

feel good will NOT necessarily make another feel good and that since I

couldn't OD on B-12 I couldn't see what the big deal was. If he did NOT

want the Navy paying for it....to give me a script and I would PAY for it

myself. He totally did a 180 on me and gave me my prescription so that the

Navy would pay for it. I still feel like crap, but he says it is too soon to

feel a difference. He didn't know how lucky he was that I forgot all the

stuff I printed up on B-12 deficiency! Then he asked how long I had had

sores in my mouth. That nearly did it for me. I told him I had been

complaining about this for almost a YEAR! He said...he didn't remember me

complaining. SHEESH.....ok....he DID tell me that Doctors were horrible

listeners. And he FINALLY did do what I asked him to do. So...when do I stop

feeling like crap?

How convenient! My ins would pay all if I get them from my doc,

but often that means sitting around til they get 2 secs, drop my

drawers in the kitchen and get a shot while the nurse runs down the

hall. LOL! Never mind, just teach me, I said. So I pay about $10/year

like everyone else, and do it on my own schedule.

AND, BTW, without insurance, the 30 shot vial is only $7 or so. I

mean, it is OH SO CHEAP. Life giving red drops.

He knows plenty. I don't live in SF anymore or I'd be in his office asking

about the connection between B-12 and my poor ciculation -- it didn't come up

until I moved to land and it got so damn cold here. I was always able to

keep hands and feet warm enough before. Deciding to try B-12 shots is purely my

idea to see if it will make a difference. I'll also check with the doctor I'm

I have been bugging (begging) my Dr for a script for over a year now.

He says he can not give it. Heck I gave myself insulin shots before

surgery...I am not afraid of that and know how to do it. GRRRRR

I am going to keep bugging (evil grin)

Why can't he give it to you? If he thinks the insurance will get

into a tizzy, don't use your ins. Mine is $3 with, $7 without. Big

deal. My doc was hesitant til I explained the intrinsic factor

connection. My dad gets B12 (c'mon over on Sunday when we line

everybody up and shoot! lol) for being " old " , so where is the problem?

Perhaps in not knowing much about it?

I am curious...why are you taking vitamin B 12? That is one thing my doctor is testing for...a vit b12 deficiency.

I am not doing well.....I am beginning to think it is all in my mind..I just seem to get worse....I am even having a problem eating...too much effort. My doctor is having me take an X-ray and blood tests and stress test...all the blood tests are strange ones like Vit B12......How can I be deficient in Vitamins I am a Vegetarian and eat so many vegetables! Things like sitting at the computer are very hard for me now....I am nauseous too and get light headed....I am so puzzled by this...it just has to be all in my mind. There are times I feel like I cannot breath....I pull my oxygen off and just pant...it must be in my mind. Has anyone had anything like this happen to you? Sometimes I cannot lift my arms or move my legs. I get so weak that holding something makes my hand and arm tremble....Anyone have problems like these. Joyce Rudy AZ birds

Beth if it does indeed turn ou tto be a Vitamin or iron deficiency I will change my diet immediately! What ever is happening to me is horrible! My heart is racing and i feel like I am dying....I am so exhausted and tired and weak....sometimes I feel like I can't breathe...I think my doctor will probably tell me the same thing...I will just realize my body can't be a vegan...or a vegetarian. Oh my! Joyce R AZ birds

C I am thinking I may have this. I sure do have the symptoms....if so , I don't think I will continue being a Vegetarian. I didn't realize we use more energy and need more protein....didn't know that. Joyce R
