Bernadette. You say that you began to notice the ALA effect 5 1/2 hours

after your first dose. I find this very interesting, because I have

also been paying attention to my reaction (to 25mg doses/3hr) and I

notice the effect beginning 5 hours after my first dose.

Now, combining this with the fact that the two times that I have missed

a dose and been ornery enough to continue anyway (three hour schedule,

just one dose missed), I have had major side effects (I will never do

that again) beginning precisely 6 1/2 hours after the point at which I

should have taken the dose and which continued for 4 1/2 hours.

My hypothesis is the following. ALA is absorbed somewhere further down

the intestinal track, and it takes 5 to 5 1/2 hours for it to get there

and then to be absorbed into the bloodstream. The " weirdness " you were

experiencing is the effect of the first dose entering the bloodstream

(ie. everything is delayed by 5 to 5 1/2 hours). The side effects I

experienced after a missed dose occur 1 1/2 hours after the dose

_should_ have made it to that part of the intestines. That is, 1 1/2

hours later the blood level has dropped far enough that I start to have

side effects.

What confuses me is this. Subsequently I have noticed that if I missed

a dose and then just stop the round; I have no side effects. The side

effects only come from missing a dose and then continuing. So, whatever

is right about this hypothesis, there is also something missing.

Thoughts?

One more thing. I just did a short DMSA round (for high lead) followed,

after a short break, by an ALA round. This ALA round was substantially

easier than previous rounds. I wonder if the ALA is pulling Hg into the

bloodstream which, if Pb is present, has a magnified toxic effect. If,

on the other hand, the Pb level in the blood has been decreased recently

by the DMSA, then the toxic effects of the moving mercury during the ALA

chelation are less.

Thoughts on this?

Thanks for your input,

Dave.

Hi,

I just wanted to thank everyone for their helpful responses and give

you an update. It turns out that those weird feelings in my brain

were transient, however scary. I was able to continue the round and

if fact gradually raised the ALA dose throughout to 5 mg. I felt

really good like I usually do on DMSA alone. So, I think it was just

my initial getting used to it.

thanks!

You might want to take your next dose around 21/2 to 23/4 hours instead

of

three hour-intervals. Some people find they " use up " the ALA faster

thean

others.

How are you getting 1 mg consistently ? I would complete the round

and see what happens. Feeling better after a round depends on a lot

of individual factors. If you are still feeling funny on the last

dosages you may want to try ending the round with the last couple of

doses of just DMSA as you say it helps you to feel better, I do this

with DMPS and it helps me.

I assume its more than 3 months since you had the amlagams removed? I

would

try dosing at 2 hourly and see if you feel better.
