Guest guest
The Center for Patient Advocacy ACTION ALERT! U.S. House of Representatives to Vote on HMO Reform A few weeks ago, the Center for Patient Advocacy sent you an e-mail Action Alert to tell you about an important vote that will be occurring in the U.S. House of Representatives on the issues of patient protection and managed care reform. The House is now expected to vote on this critical issue on October 6th and 7th. And it is absolutely critical that you contact Congress to let them know you support strong, enforceable legislation that truly will protect patients from managed care abuses. A bipartisan group of lawmakers led by Congressmen Charlie Norwood (R-GA) and Dingell (D-MI) have introduced H.R. 2723, the Bipartisan Consensus Managed Care Improvement Act. The Norwood-Dingell bill contains critical protections that would help ensure you and your family receive the quality health care you need, deserve and have paid for. The bill's provisions would: · allow you to appeal HMO denials of care to an external review panel, independent of your health plan, and require the HMO to abide by the external panel's decision; · guarantee that you have access to specialists; · ensure that medical decisions are made by you and your doctor, not HMO bureaucrats; and · give you the ability to hold HMOs legally accountable when they make medical decisions that harm patients. The bipartisan Norwood-Dingell bill has the support to pass Congress. It is supported by Republicans and Democrats. It has been endorsed by more than 300 organizations representing patients, doctors, nurses, and other health care professionals - virtually the entire medical community. And most importantly, it has the support of patients and their families nationwide. However, the HMO industry and Republican leaders in the House are working hard to defeat the Norwood-Dingell bill. In fact, the HMO industry has spent millions over the past month alone to kill this common-sense legislation so they can continue their profits over patients practice of medicine. And that's exactly why we need you help TODAY! Members of Congress - your Representatives - need to hear from you. When debate begins on October 6, the House Republican leadership is expected to try to block passage of the Norwood-Dingell bill by offering " poison pill " amendments and alternative managed care reform bills. Some of these alternatives are said to protect patients. They do not. The Norwood-Dingell bill is the only bill that includes the protections patients need. Only through the actions of voters across the country will Congress listen to the people most affected - American families - and pass a real HMO reform bill. Available on the Center for Patient Advocacy's homepage on the internet (www.patientadvocacy.org) is a sample letter you can e-mail directly to your Representatives in Washington, DC. The letter, titled " Support H.R. 2723, the Bipartisan Consensus Managed Care Improvement Act, " can be found in the Legislative Advocacy Center of the site. If you don't know the name of your Representative, don't worry. By entering your 5-digit zip code, the Legislative Advocacy Center will help you identify your Representative. By e-mailing the letter to your Representative TODAY, you can help protect your family and all patients from managed care abuses. PLEASE HELP! Contact your Representative TODAY and let him or her know that the health and lives of patients must not fall victim to the corporate bottom-line of HMOs. Thank you in advance for your help! Sincerely, Terre McFillen-Hall Executive Director, The Center for Patient Advocacy ___________________ The Center for Patient Advocacy is a private, non-profit, grassroots organization founded to represent the interests of patients nationwide and dedicated to ensuring that Americans have timely access to the highest quality health care in the world. Guest guest
In a message dated 00-01-30 01:38:02 EST, you write: << I am reposting the following to keep everyone aware of the urgency of getting those letters written and speaking to legilsators. As many of you know, the New York State group of Lyme disease advocates has just met to outline a plan of action to protect our right to treatment. We have been getting good response to our e-mail campaigns, but the following is our urgent recommendation for action at this point. >> Dear Ellen, Thanks for keeping the issue alive on the list! We are working on sending letter & getting others to do the same. As I think I've posted in the past, I recommend that everyone (who's able) join a few LARGE email lists (member numbers can usually be found at site you subscribe at) - anything that interests you - with us it's dog health / resuce issues. After you make a few posts, WHAM - let the list have it with the ACTION INFO. I was AMAZED at how many people wrote back in support - horrified of what's going on with our LLMDs, as well as how COMMON these diseases are EVERYWHERE now. Just my $.02 - another " angle " at getting more & more folks to write / call & fax. Although we all have to cope with this disease & need Marta's list for support, ideas & encouragement, I'm glad that you still post about this issue. Just got through reading a book about how " THEY " can really take docs apart who DARE to treat & heal people. Please take a minute to read these book reviews (there is a lymie's book review in the list) - these docs were stripped of licenses to practice, sabotaged (in various ways - records, etc. STOLEN, equipment & research notes destroyed, etc.) & at one point, one man was JAILED - all for having helped to CURE people of incurable diseases... SOUND FAMILIAR?????? I am sure that this book is just one of many dealing with the dirty, filthy, overwhelming GREED & CONTROL ISSUES that these SOBs foist upon the entire world. Can't remember the name of the other - medical racketeering - something to do with that. (Next on my list.) If people read about how these SOBs operate, they'll get motivated - whether they're lymies, cancer patients, AIDS patients or whatever. This affects us all. The book being reviewed deals not only with cancer, but TB, syphillus (very closely related to lyme - another spirochete), malaria, etc., etc., - all were cured with this device & they - AMA / FDA / Amer Cancer Society / JAMA - did NOT want this information out there. In fact, they've worked so hard to suppress it, it's been 70 YEARS suppressed! Hope everyone keeps the momentum going - so that lyme docs are not erradicated from the face of the earth to serve the insatiable appetite of GREED... Amazon.com: Editorial Reviews: The Cancer Cur... Blessings & velcros, Chris
Guest guest
I figured it might be a good idea to follow up the action alert with an explanation of why the letters to the NYS politicians are absolutely essential. The letters are a necessary first step in an organized plan to help Dr. B. and thus save our right to medical care: -----In order for us in NYS to be able to get access to our legislators to get them to call for an investigation of the OPMC's impartiality, we need the legislators to have received hundreds and hundreds of letters from Lyme disease patients across the country. In order for us to have leverage, the legislature and the OPMC need to know that Lyme patients across the country are keeping an eye on what happens to Dr. B. here in NYS. ----We will be sending out a press release soon and will also ask that Lyme patients in the newsgroup forward the press release to their local newspapers. However, the press release refers to a national campaign among Lyme disease patients to protest Dr. B's being targetted by the OPMC. Hence, the need for the letter writing campaign to be in full swing before the press release goes out. ----The above two steps are necessary foundations in any activism on Dr. B's behalf that will follow. These first two steps will build legislative and public support which will be absolutely necessary if any other efforts are to succeed. There are other things that are taking place, some of them behind the scenes: the GAO investigation; working to get investigations by Senator Specter and Rep. Burton; and I am sure many other things I am not aware of. However, in terms of Lyme patients organizing on a grass roots level to try to save Dr. B from being railroaded into losing his license, this letter writing campaign is the most important thing you can do right now --- with more to follow soon. Thanks, Ellen
Guest guest
Hi all, Perhaps this was posted and I missed it but where exactly is the OPMC hearing in Manhattan on the 31st? (I don't expect the doxy that I started three days ago to do anything but on the off chance I could actually go... and for anyone else who doesn't know the building, address, etc.). Yes, it is likely to be bitter cold in NYC. I've been there a zillion times (not for years now though.) and trying to think of a warm place for a large crowd. Nothing comes to mind but if it does I'll let you all know. Oh, just thought of this--what about a bus or train station? There's the Port Authority Bus Terminal which is HUGE (I've NEVER been to a larger bus terminal and I've been in them all over the country.)and is located between 8th and 9th Avenue and between 40th and 42nd Street. Grand Central Station (trains.)is at Park Avenue I think at 40th or 42nd--I'm ashamed to forget this info! Penn Station (trains.)is underneath Madison Square Garden--between 7th and 8th Avenue and 32nd to 33rd Street. All these stations can be reached by subway too for any of you who are ABLE to use the subway. I certainly couldn't. Actually I'm amazed any of you are able to even go to/be at an event like this. Anyway hope this helps. Madeleine
Guest guest
Whoa. Hold up a minute. I am hyperventilating here. On the one hand, you guys are so enthusiastic that it is really wonderful. It just shows that we really have a Lymecommunity here willing to work. At this moment, I would suggest that folks just sit tight until we can get a registration site organized. We really need to know how many people will be coming. I did mention the possibility of a vigil if hundreds and hundreds of people are intent on coming, but at this point I would advise against it - at the risk of being called a wet blanket. It takes much, much more organizing than anyone can imagine and would be a bust if not enough people showed up. Indoors at public places mentioned below would probably require a lot of red tape to arrange, if it could be arranged at all, and would probably leave us invisible because of the rest of the crowds. Anyway, and Lemans I do appreciate the enthusiasm. The best thing to do at this moment is to sit tight for a day or two. Also, I would caution against following advice from lymevoices, since we do not have a clue as to who he or she is. There have been many, many pseudonyms that came on line in the last few weeks that have tried to subvert the hearings, and a previous, highly inaccurate, post by lymevoices on sci-med, coupled with a familiar writing style used by lymevoices makes me very wary. At any rate, this person has not been involved in organizing the events in NYS, so please be careful in reading his/her posts. Guest guest
Ellen is right, there is no need for a Vigil. But I see no problem with a large turnout- " they " (officials) will find room for everyone. Either way, the more likely danger is that not enough will attend. I know she is working hard on this. > > Hi all, > > > > Perhaps this was posted and I missed it but where exactly is the OPMC > > hearing in Manhattan on the 31st?
