My 4 month old gets his DOC band on Friday and I am very nervous about how he will do? What is the adjustment period? I have heard they don't just wear it 23 hours from the start. Is it supposed to be a few hours on and then a few off? How many days till they are in it the full 23 hours?

Adjustment Period Suggestions!

My 6 month old was doing great adjusting to his band until the last couple of days when he had to wear it at night. The first night he was crying out in his sleep so much that we took it off of him. The last two nights he has woken up every hour (he used to sleep the night). He's also waking up from naps and I'm worried he is getting sleep deprived. He tugs at the band and hits it throughout the day. He has always been a very smiley baby and nothing seems to make him smile these days. I'm so worried about him and just wondered if anyone else had a similar experience. How long did it take for your baby to adjust to the band? What strategies did you use to help?

Thanks,

The same thing is happening to my 6 month old son. Used to sleep through the

night now wakes up constantly and I'm sure he's being sleep deprived (as are

we). The clinic tech was not that helpful, just be patient with it is all she's

said. We're in our 4 week of having it and I can't imagine letting him go

without sleep for another 2 months. Anyone else have any tips?

I ended up cosleeping with my daughter and that worked great. She had been

sleeping with us before, and had moved to her crib before getting her band. After

that the only way I succeeded in getting enough sleep for both of us we

cosleeping. I realize it doesn't work for everyone, so you have to decide if it

is a possible solution for you. However within 2 weeks we saw her head starting

to improve, so I was very dedicated to her starband.

I have a six-month old son (no helmet) who really needs a crib, but

we're moving into a new house this month, so we're milking the

bassinnet for another month. He's teething, the temperature is

warming up (Vermont is more humid than hot), and he was unable to

sleep. But using a hand towel as a mattress liner instantly restored

a normal sleep pattern. Beach towels are just the right size for

cribs -- pools of sweat had been forming under my two-year-olds, who

are similarly awaiting a bedding upgrade.

Six months is fortunately when ibuprofen becomes available for

teething, if your acetaminophen was recalled like ours was.

We have a hanger helmet so the transition period might be different but the first week was a transition. 1st day one hour on, one off 3x per day. 2nd day 2 hours on, 1 off 3x per day. Then 4 hours 3x, then 6 3x, then 8 2x, then 8 and all night and then full time.

I went ahead and let her nap with it during the first week and did half nights towards the end of the week. She did amazingly well. However, mine is older - 10 months - and of course, will be different with each child. She is having no trouble sleeping in it whatsover although I do have to watch her b/c she likes to side/tummy sleep and sometimes ends up face down since she naturally rolls to a stopping point which is unfortunately her face.

I also let her fall asleep without it the first few times and then put it on after asleep (with my husbands help - one holding the head, the other putting the helmet on). That may help.

I was terrified b/c she hated hats, barrettes, etc. but it really has been a nonissue. It bothers me more than her b/c I am worried about her sweating and her hair getting in her eyes! Good luck!

Also love the homeopathic teething tablets by Hylands. You can find them at just about any pharmacy/drug store. They just dissolve in their mouth and without drugging the kids, they just seem more calm.

I called the orthotist I'm working with and she said most babies adjust in 2 weeks and as long as the redness fades in an hour, that he's probably okay. But it is 3:45 am right now, I've been up since 2 because he just won't sleep and keeps crying out in his sleep. I really hope this gets better because he has to wear the helmet for 9 more weeks! I'm going to make an appointment with his pediatrician just to make sure everything else is okay, but this is really tough.

What did the ped say? Is everything okay? Poor thing is either not feeling well or is just having a really hard time.
