SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA NEWS...FEBRUARY 2006

INTRODUCING A NEW WEB SITE FOR BAY AREA CELIACS...

http://www.bayareaceliacs.org/index.htm

A new celiac, Mulrooney, has very generously offered

his talents and time in maintaining a web site for our local celiac

groups. He will be posting all of the information we send out in

our news, and more, so that we will have a place to find all those

details that get lost in the email queue or in some hidden file.

Please check it out and make it one of your favorite destinations!

Rohlfs is offering the Stanford web site she has kept for us

to a group of Stanford student celiacs. You will be referred to the

new site if you visit the old link: http://celiacsupport.stanford.edu/

We thank for his wonderful help in keeping us organized.

Any communication about the web site should be sent to

Bay Area Celiacs Webmaster, webmaster@...

If anyone in the San area would like to get together in my

home on a Saturday afternoon to share ideas, goodies and

recipes, please email me your name and phone number. I live

in the South San area (near Oakridge). This would be a

very informal setting where we could come together to make

new friends, enjoy tasting new recipes and benefit from that

much-needed support and comfort as we deal with our disease.

Also, if there are any newly-diagnosed celiacs in the San

area who need help and would like to talk with someone who

has the disease, please give me a call. I can provide literature

and materials on celiac disease and try to give you guidance

and support as you deal with your new eating lifestyle.

NEWS ITEMS...

Local Celiac Offers Online Shopping for Gluten Free Products

One of our San Francisco celiacs, Alison St. Sure, has started

an online business offering a variety of gluten free foods as well

as lots of celiac information:

http://www.surefoodsmarket.com/index.asp

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

-------------

GF Coffee Shop in Mountain View Changes Ownership

Global Blends Coffee Shop, 650 Castro Street, Mountain View,

has a new owner and the name has been changed to Spica.

The new owner is not a celiac, but is continuing to offer

gluten free foods from " Warm Oven Bakery " including muffins,

cheesecake, biscotti, banana bread, brownies, as well as

" I Can Eat That " breads to make sandwiches.

Mcs French Fries...

Some reports have been coming in about Mc's fries

not being gluten free. Their web site seems to offer contradictory

information:

http://www.mcdonalds.com/app_controller.nutrition.categories.allergens.index

..html

http://app.mcdonalds.com/countries/usa/food/nutrition/categories/allergens.p

df

Looking further, I found the information below on Clan 's

web site in the " Gluten Alerts " section, which explains why

Mc's may not know what to tell people:

" February 7, 2006: Mc's French Fries: According to

Mc's, the French Fries recipe hasn't been changed.

However, one of the processing agents (called par fry) contains

wheat. The manufacturer of par fry told Mc's that the

wheat was removed from the par fry prior to use. However,

Mc's states that the new food regulations require them

to state that the French Fries (or anything else processed with

par fry) contains wheat if wheat was ever an ingredient of the

processing agent - and even if it was " removed. " In accordance

with our policy of reporting what the manufacturer says, we will

list Mc's French Fries as NOT gluten free in future

SmartList releases. "

http://www.clanthompson.com/res_news_alerts.php3

The good news is that they at least know celiacs are worried

and perhaps they will change that processing agent some day.

Meanwhile we can eat the ketchup, no worries! (Please make

your own decision about eating the fries.)

you informed of local celiac activities and important celiac

concerns. To subscribe, report address changes, or request
