Guest guest
I will tell you from definite experience... Babywise was a complete disaster for us from start to finish. I am a researcher by training and I read that book completely, from front to back, followed everything in it for the first three and a half months of my son's life, and found it utterly useless.. It was horrible to actively try and keep him awake after he nursed. He wanted to go to sleep so often and I would just work at keeping him awake if even for a few minutes. I look back on that now with extreme guilt as well as feeling horrible for letting him cry it out at the tender age of 6 weeks. We were only able to bring ourselves to do that for a couple of weeks... our sweet little newborn never got that he should finally fall asleep. we managed for several days in a row to let him cry throughout the entire " sleep time " and he would never fall asleep. We stopped that but kept on with the eat, wake, sleep portion which never panned out. To this day (he is two a month ago), my son has problems with napping (he doesn't, althought thanks to Weissbluth - see below- he does sleep for 13 hours at night) and I am absolutely convinced that that atrocious program is what trained him in that manner. I can't bear to look back at pictures of him so tired laying on his activity mat and me trying to keep him awake. I skip past them. I finally threw away this book. Again, let me stress to you that I am a reseracher by trade and a lecturer of sociology. I have NEVER thrown away a book in my adult life. I hoard books. But I felt that this one deserved a special distinction. so I honored it with the garbage. One last note that you MUST be aware of. The " creators " of this book are NOT qualified to give sleeping advice. The main writer is a pastor at a church with NO MEDICAL TRAINING or specialty in pediatric sleep. there is a co-author that claims to be a doctor, but also has no sleep research under his belt. The pastor derives his knowledge from his congregation... read up on it through google searches. My advice is to use Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child by Weissbluth. He is a prominent pediatric sleep researcher and has done several large scale, longitudinal studies. He is pro-nursing and doesn't push cry it out unless it's necessary (but, much later down the road... like 5 or 6 months of age).. His book is research based with tons of examples, fairly easy to understand and offers help at the end of each section specifically aimed at guiding you on your own child's sleep issues.
