Guest guest
--- In Plagiocephaly , > Getting the band was the best thing for my daughter. She just turned two and you would never know that she had plagio. With that being said, she did have gross motor delays. She didn't roll over until she was 12 months and didn't walk unitl she was 19 months. Because of her helmet use I think her gross motor was delayed. We enrolled her in early intervention therapy which is a publically funded child therapy that each state has. Talk to your pediatrician if your child is not making theses milestones. However, just remember that this is my story and this is not to say that your child will have delays. Good luck and God bless!
Guest guest
Chanda, My son is now 4 and a half - but he had tort and plagio as a infant so hopefully I can help with your question. He actually did everything (gross motor skills that is) right on schedule. Sat at 6 months, crawled at 9 - etc, etc. He even was rolling over with the helmet on. Sitting at 8 months is a little late - but not out of the realm of what is normal for all babies. Every baby develops at different rates - even without these additional challenges. Usually if a baby is particularly vocal - they'll crawl later. Or if they are good walkers they talk later. It seems they put all their effort into developing one skill at a time. I would still double check with medical professionals such as your pediatrician and physical therapists to see what they recommend. Often they can suggest activities that can help promote the development of your child's skills. Strenthening their muscles is the most important thing - which is only possible if they are given the opportunity to move around. Hope this helps and good luck! -Laurie
Guest guest
Hi Chanda- Every baby is so different, it's really hard to say what is the cause for some delays and what isn't. My son was diagnosed with tort very early (2 months) and was done with PT by 6 months old. He rolled and sat up on schedule, and I guess technically crawled on schedule, though he only belly/military crawled for 3-4 months. He finally got up on his knees to crawl around 11 months. He didn't walk until he was 16 months. At the time, the ped said he had some low muscle tone and he just needed encouragement to climb and move so he could build up the strength he needed to get around. He now runs like a champ and is working on mastering the skill of jumping (one he practices every chance he gets!). (BTW, all of this happened before he got his band, so I personally don't think the band has much to do with it at all, at least not in our case). Just yesterday, we started speech therapy as he was diagnosed with a mild delay (although as soon as he turned 2, he started adding new words to his vocabulary on a daily basis). The ST mentioned that tort can cause mild low muscle tone, even in the face muscles. She said she noticed that his cheeks appear to be a little lax, which may be giving him trouble in forming correct sounds. She also said if they have low muscle tone in their legs or something, that it's most likely throughout their whole body in one way or another. So basically, it's possible that some babies have low muscle tone from the tort or other issues, but it's not necessarily cause for over concern at this point. I think encouragement and the freedom to explore things around them is what helps babies to reach their milestones. So give him a lot of floor time (can he sit propped with a Boppy around him? that's what I always did with my babies, or prop him up between your legs, but don't support him completely, let him work for balance) and place some toys out of his reach to see what he does. I agree with the other mom though, that babies do seem to put all their efforts into learning one skill at a time. So now that he's learned to roll over, he can focus on sitting up. Hope that helps some. Good luck! Jake-2 (tort resolved/rt plagio/DOCBand #2 2 more days!!!) Jordan-4.5 > > Hi > > I am sorry to bother you guys with too many questions and too many emails. I am hoping to get some reassurance here. This is my fist born and I already feel that I failed as a mother . My baby has tort and severe plagio. He is not sitting up by himself yet. he is almost 8 months old. He just started rolling over last month. I heard from CT that babies with tort have issues with these milestones. > > Can you please tell me when your babies started rolling over, sitting up and crawling ? I am not trying to compare but would like to get some reassurance that babies with tort are not really delayed in all these milestones. Did you guys notice that your babies were delaying in their milestones before their tort or plagio was untreated. Did you see any improvement once you started their treatments? Please help. > > Looking for some support and reassurance from this group. > Chanda >
