Anyone notice a delay in milestones due to helmet?

Hi All...

Just curious if any of you who had your LO banded at a young(er) age

noticed a delay in milestones that you attributed to the helmet. Luke

is my second, and my oldest didn't need banding - he was right on

target with milestones like rolling back to belly and sitting up. Luke

will be five months tomorrow and has had his DOC Band for 2.5 weeks.

He's not rolling back to belly yet (his older brother did it right at 5

months), and it's still a little early to expect him to sit

unsupported... like I said, just curious to know if anyone noticed a

delay. My pediatrician said it's not common for the helmet to cause a

delay and I didn't expect to notice one, but I HAVE noticed that he's

stopped rolling belly to back as often as he used to before he got the

DOC Band.

Thanks so much!

Jess

Hi Jess,

Our ortho said that bands usually really do not cause delays. My daughter

is 6.5 months old and HATES to roll over because she hates to be on her tummy,

but has been able to sit up all by herself for a month! Who knows! I think she

will be crawling before she is able to roll over belly to back. My ped didn't

seem concerned, although at times I do wonder if the band makes a difference. I

do think babies are very adaptable, my daughter has started sleeping on her side

since her band! Hope all is well!

Thanks ! I can't believe McKenna has been sitting up for a

month already! My oldest was definitely a little late on that! He

didn't sit on his own till 7.5 months! Luke seems a lot closer to

sitting, though - he doesn't hate being on his belly, though, which

is why I think it's so weird... I think I'm just dying for him to

roll back to belly b/c I STILL swaddle him in a Kiddopotomus swaddle

and I want to stop! He won't sleep without it - neither would my

oldest until he started to roll - as soon as he could sleep on his

belly he was fine. Both of them are great sleepers, though, so I

should really just count my blessings!

I think that it does have a development delay. My Son Zach was banded at 5 months (In June) also and was not rolling over until about seven months and when the band came off in August ( he had it on for about 10 weeks) he was sitting up unsupported and crawling soon after. So try not to worry:) He was my second also and my first child was right on target with development with no helmet. It might take them longer but they will get there. I know that they say the helmet does not weigh much but it has to be heavy if you are only 12 pounds!:) Hope that helps!
