Hi -

Try using a soft toothbrush with the alcohol instead, it's much better

at scrubbing the grime. It will get dirty and discolored eventually,

no matter how hard you clean it, but for the most part, you can knock

the smell out with a good scrubbing. It's also recommended to wipe it

out to dry the sweat immediately after taking it off before it sets

in. You can also scrub at the grime with an old clean and dry

washcloth/towel. Old is better because it's rougher and do that first

before doing the alcohol and brush. Once you start getting

adjustments, the smell gets a little more manageable because half of

the foam is shaved out and you have fresh foam underneath that doesn't

seem to get quite as dirty. Hope that helps!

I agree- scrub the heck out of it!! The foam inside has lots of

little cavities for sweat to hide and its stinky. I use a pretty

rough washcloth and soak the foam with alcohol then scrub- adding more

EtOH as needed to keep it wet. Then I use a damp washcloth to wipe

(the EtOH was irritating my sons head) and I set the helmet in the sun

to dry. The sun will really help keep bacteria from growing.

We are in the 3rd week of helmeting and we have been able to remove

the smell each night with this routine.

Good luck to you!

It was also recommended to us that we use Dial or Ivory soap and wipe

out the inside and then do the alcohol. We are only on day 7, so things

are not too smelly...yet!
