This is die off!

Here are some tips:

Activated Charcoal for a brief time.Do not take it during meal times.

Some have found that epsom salts baths can also relieve some sypmtoms

of die-off. Here is a saved message regarding this:

Start with 1 cup of salts in waist deep water and soak for at least

20 minutes. If this is tolerated go up to 2 cups of salts per bath. If

it is not well tolerated (hyperness, irritability, whining), cut the

dose to 1/2 a cup. or less until you get to a point it is tolerated.

There is no way we could know whether this could be hypoglycemia. If one is

following SCD as prescribed in the book, you should not have hypoglycemia,

because there are plenty of carbs allowed.

If you tend to have a problem with hypoglycemia, or have some other reason to

think you have it, you may need to talk to your doctor.

Are you modifying SCD and eating mostly protein, very low carb?

Die-off symptoms can be awful. Taking activated charcoal capsules can help

tired. I went down to the kitchen and ate a chicken leg because I felt so

shakey. Ten minutes later, I was on the couch sweating, shaking worse, and

my heart beat was up 30 beats a minutes and beating really hard. It took the

whole morning to feel like I could even get in the shower. After that, I've

slowly been getting back to a semi normal feeling. I am still really foggy

in the brain, and tired, but other than that, I am better.

Is this die off, hypoglycemia, or what?

Do not do that diet for more than 3-5 days. usually people do only 2 days.

Patti,

I am only eating meat and eggs, because I don't tolerate a single SCD legal

carb. I did give in today and ate some grape juice jelllo, and blood sugar

wise, i feel better. But the lining of my stomach isn't too happy. Not

terribly upset, but definitely irritated somewhat.

To be honest, I don't know if SCD is a good idea for you if you truly can't

tolerate ANY of the fruits or vegetables. You MUST have some source of carbs.

What carbs were you eating before SCD? Grains and potatoes?

I am eating the jello, it's just that it does irritate me somewhat. Maybe if

someone could define " tolerate " for me, I would feel better about this. Does

tolerate mean that you don't have a single bad side effect from the food? Or

is it ok to have just a little bit of irritation as long as it's legal?

When I started SCD I had a very compromised immune system. The clothes on my

back

actually hurt me and eating brought pain. Within a few days I was able to eat in

relative

comfort. I could eat eggs and cheese, which I could not touch before. An

allergist had

included rice on my OK list and I had been having quite a bit of it and

attributing

symptoms to the meat it was served with.

Give yourself more time. The bad bacteria are putting up a battle to survive now

that their

starch and sugary favotite foods are denied them.

I make one recipe that creates four little custard cups of grape gelatin and it

is diluted with

half water and half juice as you need water to dissolve the powdered gelatin. I

sometimes

add grape juice to cooking as I would wine and it gets dilutes into pan juices.

I find it too

sweet as a thirst quenching drink, again, always diluted. There is no defined

amount of

grape juice so use common sense. I also do not overdo juice in geberal as I like

the fiber in

whole fruit. (raisns are my downfall and I only but a few ounces at a time).

At this point, I imagine quite a few foods that are SCD legal are going to cause

you *some* symptoms.... but if the only carbs you've been eating pre-SCD were

corn and sugar, I think you've got so much going on die-off-wise that I'm not

sure you would be able to tell what was die-off and what was " not tolerating " a

food. We are to avoid any foods that cause ANAPHYLACTIC type reactions....

permanently... but you are going to HAVE to include some SCD legal carb

sources, EVEN IF they cause you some slight discomfort.

If necessary, just eat a little tiny bit every two hours. Even ONE BITE of

something like pureed squash or applesauce every two hours would be better than

eating nothing but eggs and meat and a tiny bit of grape jello. You need more

carbs!

PLEASE read the other posts I sent today about yeast, honey and the dangers of

doing a low-carb version of SCD.

I am not familiar with this. Elaine advised those with yeast concerns tio be

prudent in the

amount of honey used. legal carbs do not feed bad intestinal bacteria to the

extent that

illegals do.

Patti,

Kinda funny that I did exactly what you said, RIGHT before reading this

email. :-) I fixed up some pureed green beans and added them to some meat

and cheese that I was eating. I also ate a tiny spoonful of them. I will try

and snack on it every two hours, but my tummy is definitely rebelling. I'm

sure it's the gastroparesis (stomach paralysis). Once it's past my stomach,

I do great. I can tell this diet is GREAT for my intestines, and not so

great for my tummy. They want two different things! It is common for people

with gp to not be able to eat any fiber. :-/

Keep hangin' in there with me! :-)

I hope the gastroparesis is something that will improve (??). In the meantime, I

imagine just pureeing any vegetable or fruit you take in would at least get it

past your stomach more quickly, as it would not have to break it down.

I'm wondering if, in your case, it might be better to eat your meat or eggs

separately from the veggies or fruit.... so your stomach does not have to do the

work of breaking down the protein food while the dreaded fiber-laden veggie is

in there?? You might try that.... alternate every two hours... a little meat or

eggs, then two hours later, a few bites of pureed veg.

You might even put your pureed green beans through a mesh strainer/sieve.... to

take any stringy extra-fibrous parts out.

That's a good idea with taking the veggie and the meat and eggs

separately....and I tried that last night. It actually made it worse. ?? Go

figure. Nobody ever said gp made sense! :-) So, for now, what works is to

actually mix it in with the meat. I cooked a big roast last night that had

some fat in it, and I noticed that if the meat has fat, I have a lot better

time digesting the veggie with it. Again, it makes no sense.

I will try the strainer with the green beans, although I'm wondering if any

of it will drain out....and what would be the purpose of that? Seems like it

would be just as good to make green bean juice. :-) My food processor

really didn't get them pureed enough, I don't think. There's still clumps in

it. Maybe my blender is a better option, I don't know. It seems to get it

more like baby food.

I guess I meant to sort of press the food through the sieve/strainer... just to

remove the larger, stringier bits, not ALL of the fiber. If you can get a fine

puree with your blender, then great. I use a hand blender which works really

well.

Oh, ok. That makes more sense. I apologize......die off also means die off

of brain cells, evidently. :-)

Come to think of it, I have a hand blender too. Guess it's time to bring it

out!

Hi ,

How are you feeling now? Any better?

I'm celiac too and had very similar symptoms after 3 days on

acidophilus pills (pre-scd). I also am allergic to most vegetables.
