doc band or wait?

I agree with the rest of the gang. My daughter was also 5 1/2 months when we were agonizing over the decision to band or not. She just turned 8 months old this week...and she also graduated from her DOC band this week. We were struggling over the same issues...should we wait to see if it corrects itself or not. We decided to go for it right away (with much research and pain on our part, not hers!) as it meant she would have to wear the band for very little time.

I can't tell you how pleased we are the with results. In the two days she has had the band off, all I want to do is rub her little round head. During the 10 weeks she had it on, she never seemed to even notice it was on her head.

I wish you the very best during your decision making. Please know that it's a piece of cake once you make the decision and get the band on. I actually now miss the band as she looks so grown up without it!

All the best to you!

I must agree with the consensus, as well. Our six month old son's

first day as one of the cool kids on the block (i.e., children lucky

enough to wear a cranial band) was just yesterday.

My wife and I agonized for weeks waiting for that horrible day to

arrive. We just knew he wasn't going to like it and that he was

going to hate us for the rest of his life for making him wear this

huge, uncomfortable, embarassing helmet.

But that's not what happened at all! So far he has not complained

one bit - not one single tear, or even a little whimper. He's still

the same happy little guy who loves to laugh and smile all the time.

We didn't see any pinching or rashes or any negative side effects.

He took a nice, long, two hour nap today, so sleeping doesn't appear

to be a problem, either.

As nervous and full of self-doubt as we were just two days ago, we

are now completely relieved that all our fears proved to be

unfounded. The only issue I have seen is that his little head sweats

more than it used to (we live in Miami), but we're simply going to

turn our a/c down a little lower than normal and dress him in cooler

clothes when he goes outside. Problem solved.

The one thing we still haven't been tested on yet, however, is facing

the public scrutiny. Our first big test in that department will come

in a few weeks when we go to Disney World (it doesn't get much more

public than Disney). I'm trying to find him a t-shirt that says, " My

parents took me to a craniofacial specialist and all I got was this

stupid helmet " or something to that effect.

Good luck with your decision. In our case, we didn't want to go

without the band, then have to look back one day several years from

now and wonder if we could have avoided some problems if we had

gotten him the band when he was still young enough for it to be

effective. That made it a no-brainer. We opted for the band, and I

am happy (and quite relieved) to say it was the right choice.
