My son Aidan, who will be 6 months next week, just got his hanger

helmet last Friday. Needless to say it is not going over well - with

him or with me. He seems very uncomfortable. The helmet seems to be

applying alot of pressure to his forehead. In fact it " scrunches " or

pushes his forehead down to the point where his eyes seem as if they

are squinting.

Has anyone ever experienced this? We are on day 3 of the " wearing

schedule " , you know the one hour on hour off, 3 hours on 1 hour off,

etc...and we are in no better place then we were when he left the

clinic Friday afternoon. I seriously need some words of wisdom

here...my heart just breaks for my little guy! **Thanks

You should go in for an adjustment. It is usually not perfect the first time. However if this is a problem after the first adjustment then something might be wrong with the way the helmet is fitted. Also watch for red spots that don't go away after 30 min., Mom to Elijah DOC band Grad & Undergoing CSTFrom: mjlewinski <mjlewinski@...>Subject: Need some encouragement....Plagiocephaly Date: Sunday, October 19, 2008, 8:21 PM

Hi, I have been told that the helmet should not scrunch the eyes or give a pinched appearance. For exampl, the skin should not seem to bulge around where the helmet is. If it is kind of forcing his eyes to close than something is not fitting right. Our orthotist shortened up the front of our sons and it helped a lot. Also, I am not sure if you have weekly checks but you probably need to call and get him seen before going full time wear. Also, the schedule is really easy to pick back up after the adjustment is made. For us once they made Sam's adjustment they put us on an accellerated schedule to get him back up to where he was before the pressure. One thing I know for sure is that we will ALL get through this thing. Just have to keep looking toward the end result. I already see Sam's

eyes shifting a little and his ears getting more symetrical and some of the bulges are bulging less already!

Hi there,

I'm very sorry for your worries. Actually, I was in that same boat nearly three weeks ago. You see, my son Seth had the same exact situation, he is nearly 6months now. We too received our helmet from Hanger in San, TX. I would put it on him gradually and notice that too. However, I thought that was the way it was "suppose" to fit. I raised my concerns the day he got the helmet and the ortho said "no its fine, its applying pressure where pressure is needed". So I take him home and follow the instructions of gradually getting him used to it. WOOOOAH!. By the 5th day my friend...wow. TERRIBLE! On the 5th day, he wore it for the longest period, about 15 hours...I noticed horrible ridge-like indentions in the front sutures. And I just started bawling. These ridges were so obvious and elevated. I did my research and I discovered that what probably happened is that his sutures were compressed together and beginning to

overlap. HUGE deal that could or may need surgery to resolve. We see the nuerosurgeon on Tuesday- wo we'll see.

I feel hurt and neglected by our ortho...dont like Hanger. Even the staff is pissy.

Baby Seth 6months...only wore the helmet for a week.

We had the squishiy angry eye look the first day also. My daughter had a STARband. A quick adjustment fixed it.

My son had a Hanger helmet also and we experienced the same thing with

the forehead scrunching. When we went back to Hanger, we found out

that we were putting the helmet on wrong. We needed to open the side

once it was on and tilt it foreward without pushing his forehead down.

Basically, we were scrunching it down when we put it on his head. I

don't know if that really makes sense, but it's hard to explain. Talk

to your orthotist though. That's the best thing to do anytime that you

are in doubt.
