Do you know about Lyme-Teens at eGroups? It's a list just like only it has more young people involved in it. There are a few of us there who are either in college, been to college, or wanting to go to college. We may be able to relate to you in a different way than this list. You can join by sending a blank email to Lyme-Teens-SubscribeeGroups . Of course you DON'T have to join, and you DON'T have to leave even if you do join. I just wanted to let you know of the other option. =)

About the insurance: I don't think you have much room there. They specifically set it up to try to get people off their policies as soon as possible. I too was on my parent's insurance until I could no longer go to college full-time. I then switched to my state's insurance plan, Oregon Heath Plan. This was an option for me because I had/have no income and filed for Social Security disability. I'm not really sure what options you have in your state. It's definitely worth calling whatever disability services you have and ask them about options. You may be able to qualify for some kind of short term insurance.

About college - don't worry! You can easily go to a Community / Junior College for one or two years and then apply at somewhere else. MANY people go this way not because of poor grades in high school, but for a variety of other reasons. A girl on the Lyme-Teens list took a year off after high school and still was accepted into a four-year school this year as a freshman. You will have plenty of opportunities to get a college degree.

I too, was subjected to too many drug tests. I mean afterall, a high school student who wears sunglasses all the time and is always tired must be doing drugs - right? It sucks. I'm glad you finally found the Lyme diagnosis. This doesn't mean all your problems are solved, but it will help you put things into the right perspective.

Let me know if I can help in any other way. Think about the Lyme-Teens list okay?

=)

hi. my name is erika. i'm 18, living in connecticut. i was just diagnosed with lyme disease in may, after having withdrawn from college because i was so sick with what had been misdiagnosed as too much caffiene, mono, the flu, and just about everything else they could think of.my doctor now thinks that i have had lyme disease for over 3 years, during which time my grades dropped dramatically. now i fear that because i didn't know that i had lyme disease, i have blown my chance at getting a college education. my parent's insurance company is getting close to dropping me since i'm no longer in school and 18. does anyone know if there is some way i can talk to the insurance company, and to universities about giving me a second shot at things once i get better?i know that lyme disease is pretty much an unknown disease...i didn't even know much about it until i got the dreaded diagnosis. i had no clue what any symptoms were besides the bulls eye rash, which i never got. i looked back to when my academic and personal problems started in high school, and i had so many symptoms, i couldn't believe it. the entire time i kept getting written of as having an attitude or discipline problem, then they all thought i was on drugs...my doctor has been pretty helpless in getting me the treatment i need because of the crap my insurance company is putting him through. right now i'm only on 1500mg of amoxicillin a day. he originally started me with doxyciclene, but i had an allergic reation and had to go to the hospital. my doctor wants to send me to a specialist, as well as send me to a physical therapist, and a psychologist, but the insurance company won't let him.have any of you had to deal with such bad beurocratic nonesense from insurance companies? if so, what did you do to resolve the problem? i'd be thankful for any help that anybody may be able to give me.thank you so much, erika

Dear ,

Your story is heartbreaking. Why don't you try calling your Attorney

General's

Office to find out about your rights regarding your parent's policyholder

dropping you.

The number is 860-808-5355 or 860-808-5318. Ask for , if he is still

there.

He was an Assistant Attorney General working on the denial of care for Lyme

patients in

1999. Good luck.

  • 1 year later...

I was so tired all day yesterday - split a little wood, spread some gravel and crashed around 7:30. I feel good this morning.

Nice day here but cool (38). Mom & dad are coming down this afternoon so I will be doing battle with the vacuum cleaner. :-)

Have a good day everyone

Dennis

Hi Jan

I would talk more, but I have been really busy the past couple of week. We had the 95 year old gentleman that my wife and I take care of in the hospital. He has degenerative emphysema and was in pretty bad shape. Brought him home last Wednesday. He is in diapers and has to be on oxygen 24 hours a day. at least when we can get him to keep the canula in his nose. Poor old guy has hallucinations and thinks everyone is stealing all that he has. trust me he doesn't have anything that is of much value.

He really needs to be somewhere where he can get 24 hour care. My wife and I are not really trained for this kind of stuff.

Well I had better go for now.

Good luck, , it takes a special kind of person

to do what you're doing. Don't be afraid to find other

options for him, if he needs more care than you can

give. You've got to take care of yourself too. I will

pray for the 3 of you. -dz-

I wish you and your wife the best with the elderly man..He is at a very mature age but I do understand how it is when they get like that...Before my father passed away he thought mexicans were living with him...He'll be in my prayers...

You and your wife are in my prayers..... I don't think anyone can

fully understand how much a person has to give of themself to be a

caregiver, until you are in that position...... I have helped my

girlfriend with her bedridden Mother who passed last year in her 90's...

And I also did that type of work before I became disabled... You have to

be a caring individual to give of yourself like that.... I used to be

against nursing homes, but sometimes there is no other choice.... It

takes a bigger person to admit that they just can't do it anymore and

they don't have to be ashamed of saying it.... I give you credit where

credit is due..

Angel Hugs,

Diane

Hi Jan

He thinks that there are a bunch of kids stealing everything from his room and I'm the gang leader. I'm afraid that if he doesn't get better we are going to have to call his son in Michigan. Even though we have taken care of him there isn't much that we can do since we are not actually family.

Glad to hear it. Let it be a comfort to you that have

given an old man a wonderful gift, even though he may

not have the capacity to realize it. -dz-

Hi Jan

We have been taking care of him for 4 years. It has only been in the last 2 or 3 months that his health has started to decline.

It wouldn't be so bad if we could get him to stay in bed like he is supposed to. Every time he gets up he falls and My wife or I have to lift him back to the bed. We don't get paid for taking care of him at all. we do it just to be kind. I'm beginning to worry that one of us will hurt our backs trying to lift him.

That is so sad ..You know it is pitiful when a parent lives to be a ripe old age and what do they have to show for it?? Their family doesn't even care..It's like my daughter and I..She hasn't spoken to me in almost 2 years and when she has called it is to curse and try to degrade me..I was there for all of her life through good and bad and now she would rather me disappear off the face of the earth..What happens to our children..My father gave me away when I was 2 years old but you bet I was here for him in the end no matter what our differences were...He was able to see his grandchildren where i am not allowed to...My prayers are with you and your wife...

Hi Jan

At least his son comes down to visit at least once a year. I'm not sure that he really doesn't care. I think he just doesn't want to make an extra trip from Michigan if he doesn't have to. His health hasn't been very good the last couple of years either.

You were not out of line at all. I don't like the way people are treated at nursing homes. It's a shame that most of them are put there and their family just abandons them. Many of the employees don't care much either.

I hope that you are feeling good today.

I had bad stomach pains for 4 days, yesterday I

finally started feeling a little better. I'm sorry to

hear of the problems on the domestic front, I hope

that you're able to work things out. Feel free to

share anything you feel comfortable with. -dz-
