Guest guest
I have heard mixed reviews from Hanger. It kinda depends on the Orthotist and some locations are known to screw things up. It is a hard decision! I know, I paid out of pocket for our DOC band because we weren't severe enough for coverage, But I don't regret a thing. I would go visit and prepare a list of questions at Hanger, see if you are satisfied. Also I know CT has financing options.Keep us posted!!Mom to Elijah DOC band grad 8/11/08 & undergoing CSTFrom: lfstephens <lfstephens@...>Subject: Hanger vs DOC Band???Plagiocephaly Date: Monday, October 13, 2008, 5:51 PM My 7 month old, was recently evaluated at Cranial Tech for his plagio. However, our insurance is denying Cranial Tech (United Health Care) b/c it is out of network. They have said they will cover a helmet from Hanger orthotics. Has anyone else had this issue? I was really looking forward to working with CT, the staff and Dr. was great. I had never really heard of Hanger before UHC told me about them. Are there any differences between the 2 helmets? The people at Hanger said they are identical. However, the prices are extrement different (Hanger is much cheaper) I am just trying to find out if a Hanger at helmet will be just as successful. I do not want to cut costs at the expense of the shape of my son's head. Any words of advice??? Guest guest
We had a Hanger. Knowing what I know now... I wish I had fought for a DOC. But that is just me. Read thru old posts. Talk to the ortho at the hanger you will be going to a decide for yourself. The 2 bands are not identical... the Ortho is a major part of the banding process... orthos are not trained the same at Hanger as at DOC. I'm not saying all hangers are bad... but there doesn't seem to be a "standard" or "quality control" in the processing of the bands. Guest guest
Hi There, My son is currently seeing an orthotist at Hanger in SA, Tx...which is going ehhh. pretty south. First of all, the orthotist is very kind and sweet. However, when he initially scanned my thrn 4month old, he assured us that the helmet would target certain areas vs other areas. We get the helmet, he wears it less than two weeks, it doesnt close....it causes my poor son to develop ridges or indentions in the top parts of his skull...very scary situation. We scheduled an emergency appt and he says, but by just looking over his head, that Seth's head grew majorly- untrue! He did the scan. He noticed the changes were not even apparent, so looks like he actually had the helmet fabricated and it didnt exactly fit. Now we are awaiting a new helmet b/c the orthotist screwed up- but good thing, he didnt charge us for the 2nd one. Guest guest
Since Hanger focuses on all sorts of prosthetics and orthotics, you should be sure that the ortho in your local Hanger office has experience with helmets. We use Hanger and have seen good correction so far and have not had any problems, but our ortho has been doing this for over 10 years (I got great comfort out of seeing all of the old photos of our ortho together with the kids in helmets and thank you cards from the parents all along the office wall). While there have been some other parents with positive feedback about Hanger, there have been a decent amount of complaints; so I'd based the decision on what other options you have locally (CT is not in every state) and the experience of the local Hanger ortho. good luck! kristine (mom to ava)
Guest guest
Lyndsi, We had the EXACT same situation. We ended up going with CT, even though it was a 3 hour drive each way for us while Hanger was only 35 minutes. We do not regret our decision because our local Hanger ortho was pretty inexperienced. We did go through the appeal process and were denied twice. We are out of appeals and left with the care credit payment plan, but would do it again in a heartbeat. Good luck with your decision!
