Painting Helmet

My daughter got a STARband 2 days ago and is doing GREAT!! I was so

worried about it but like many posters have said, it bothers me way

more than it bothers her.

I really want to paint it but have a few questions.

--Can it be done in the 1 hour time frame that they are allowed to

keep it off?

--How bad will the paint chip?

--Will stickers on top of the paint make the paint peel off?

--Do you paint the velcro strap also??

My ortho actually recommended that we don't paint and only use

stickers but I would really like a pink helmet so it doesn't look so

medical. Any advice or shared experiences are appreciated. Thank you!

We use paper backed stickers with nothing under or over them. They work great. I was too afraid the paint would flake off. There are so many adorable stickers for girls............much bigger selection than boys.

Sorry this doesn't help your painting question. Have fun decorating, whatever you decide to do.

That's great news that your daughter has adjusted well do the band!!

We have a DOC band, so hopefully someone can tell you specifics about

decorating the Star band, but I do have some thoughts. Our Ortoist

also mentioned not painting--I think that they worry about paint

getting on the inside of the band and the upkeep. There was no way

that I wasn't going to paint though--I love the look. we have had

ours decorated for the week, and the paint/stickers are holding up

just fine. Our LO is only 4-months old though, so a more active one

might get more bumps and chips. I am guessing that at some point I

might have to peel it all off and do it again--but it sounds like

that is no biggie. I was told NOT to paint the velcro--I was bummed

about that at first, but when it was all done, it didn't look bad

unpainted. I did three layers acrylic paint, stickers, then two coats

of modge podge--you can also do a layer of paint after paint before

stickers so that the stickers don't mess up the paint job (wish I

would have done that). I hoped to have it done in an hour, but it

took longer--I'm a bit of a perfectionist. It did help to do it under

a ceiling fan to help with drying and I used a blow dryer on low and

cool heat between layers. Good Luck!!!
