The United States-México Border Health Commission (BHC)

wishes to share this white paper, Health Disparities and the U.S.-México

Border: Challenges and Opportunities. This white paper addresses the particular

health challenges in the border region and identifies how the region can

serve as a source for innovative models that can bring together multiple

levels of government and leaders across geographic and jurisdictional

borders.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

The border region is one of the fastest growing in the nation, with a

majority Hispanic population, in addition to having lower educational

attainment, lower income status, higher rates of unemployment and poverty,

and a significant shortage of health care providers. These challenges

contribute to diminished health, well-being, and access to health care.

Despite these challenges, the border region can serve as a source for

identifying innovative models that ensure collaboration among various levels

of government and the private sector. Some of these opportunities include

improving access to health care on the border; creating a culture of wellness

and prevention and strengthening the public health infrastructure; and

promoting evidence-based interventions and models of excellence.

This white paper may be of interest to border health partners and others in

the United States–México border region.
