Guest guest
Hi everyone, It's been a long (and at times very frustrating!!!) haul. Aiden was born on November 18, 2006 with severe Plagio (5 weeks premature). The end of May 2007 he was fitted with his first helmet with a cephalic index of 116. At first he received some really good correction; I believe his cephalic index went down to 96, but by August/September/October absolutely no more improvements. His ortho (one of 3 that we saw alternately) pointed to the growth chart and said: " You can't expect much improvement anymore at his age " . Early November 2007 he was fitted with his second helmet. It was an absolute disaster: red spots, squished eyes and ears, rotating on his head. It was so bad, that I questioned if maybe we had received some other baby's helmet. At his appointment on January 3, 2008, the clinician pronounced him " graduated " and advised to " just keep his hair longer, don't give him a buzz cut..... " . Well, by that point he would simply pull his ill-fitting helmet off his head, so there was no more hope for help at the local orthotic lab. January went by February and my heart was just breaking looking at his little head that was just so terribly disproportioned. Early March we took some pictures and sent them to Cranial Technologies in Oakbrook Gerrace, Illinois; quite a distance for us, since we live in St. Louis, Missouri. So, to make a long story short, our first trip to Oakbrook was on the 31 March, first helmet fitting on the 14th of April and now he has GRADUATED. His improvements are remarkable - all the 'corners' (for a lack of a better description) have been 'knocked off'. Before, it seemed like his head had angles everywhere, now it is nice and rounded and I don't believe that anyone who does not know about Plagio will notice the remaining imperfection. No, his head is not 'perfect', but we did not expect or try to achieve that at his age. What has been achieved is a nice little-boy-looking rounded out head. So, now I come to thank all who have inspired us to go forward to achieve what seems like a miracle for out little guy. All the members and moderators who gave advice and guided us in the right direction. Ginny and the wonderful staff at Oakbrook Terrace who gave our little boy his wonderful looking head and lovingly worked with us. The people at Angelflight Central and all the amazing pilots who flew us to appointments. Two friends who endured the trip by car twice with me (six hours each way with a toddler is a loooong trip). So, once again, thank you all, Heidrun, Aiden's proud Grandma Postscript: There will be a posting forthcoming featuring Abbey, Aiden's little sister, but she deserves her own page.
