Hi Leila –

I’m not sure how Kaiser works where you are but we have

Kaiser in Northern California and the band was covered. The band was

considered Durable Medical Equipment (DME). Our specific policy covered

DME at 80% so you should check and see what, if any, DME coverage your policy

has. Our Kaiser ped referred up to a plastic surgeon at Kaiser who

evaluated my son and then he wrote us the prescription for the band and sent us

to the local STARband provider; they wouldn’t cover a band from Hanger or

CT.

Did your doctor put in a referral for you to see a specialist?

I can’t imagine that the specialist wouldn’t write you a prescription

given your daughter’s severity. Who wrote the prescription for you

when you got the band from ECA? Perhaps you can get a copy of it and take

that to CT or STAR as you will need a prescription to get a band from either

one of them. You may also want to call Kaiser and find out who their

preferred provider is for DME.

Hope this helps!

Subject: [sPAM] Who referred you to CT in ndale, VA?

For those of you who were referred to CT in ndale, VA, could you give me

the name of the doctor who referred you and what insurance you had/have?

I took Maysa to her 9 months check up this morning at Kaiser and although the

doctor put in a referral for treatment for Maysa, she said it would most

likely be denied. I told her that we were ready to pay out of pocket

but she still wasn't sure whether or not she could write me a referral.

I can't wait any longer, I have an appointment with CT on

Monday morning.

Thanks,

Leila

ECA never asked for a referral or a prescription. Only CT or the makers of the Starband. I will call my ped tomorrow to see if she'd refer me to a specialist.

Thanks!

That sounds so shady. Why would ECA NOT need a script? That's very

odd to me. I've never heard of anyone NOT needing a script to get

the helmet. That's usually half the battle, getting a doctor to

write one.

Can't your ped just write the script for you? It doesn't need to

come from a specialist.

I think a prescription is needed for any device like this. How are

they using this device without a prescription? If you're looking for a

refund you could see if this gives you any leverage. In two years on

this board this is the first I've heard of anyone getting a

helmet/band without an Rx.
