Guest guest
I'm with ... I thought Weissbluth's Heealthy Sleep Habits Happy Child was an excellent research based resource by a medical professional with YEARS of experience and science to back up his theories. He does believe that letting a baby cry is out (around 5 or 6 months, like said) via extinction (ie - " cold turkey " - let them cry as long as it takes) is the best method of sleep training, BUT he doesn't push that method and acknowledges that other methods can be successful as well if a parent doesn't feel that extinction is for them. Ferber uses " graduated extinction " - letting a baby cry for longer and longer periods until they fall to sleep - Weissbluth argues that when you really look at this method it results in more crying over the length of time it takes you to sleep train, it takes longer, and parents are more likely to give up with this method. I used a combination of Weissbluth and Hogg's Babywhisperer principles (E.A.S.Y. - a schedule of Eat, Activity, Sleep, time for Yourself that gradually increases the intervals of activity time and the amount of time a baby goes between feedings as they get older). Babywhisperer is a kinder, gentler approach, but she gives great illustrations of how to recognize the signs that your baby is tired (ie - the " Seven Mile Stare " ). She also advocates swaddling much longer than most (my oldest was swaddled till he could roll over onto his belly at 5 months, Luke still isn't rolling and is still swaddled!). I think her principles would work a lot better with a younger baby, though. I can't really comment on Babywise b/c I never read it, but I never read it for the reason that pointed out - I knew it was written by a pastor along with an OB turned pediatrician with little to no sleep experience. The biggest reason I didn't even bother with it is b/c the American Academy of Pediatrics actually issued an alert regarding their concerns with this book. It offers no scientific proof of the claims its authors present and they recommend the parent dictate when the baby eats, rather than allowing the baby to eat when he/she needs to eat (from what I understand, anyway). Pantley's No Cry Sleep Solution is a good resource if you're interested in sleep training and don't want to let your LO cry it out... And if you'd like my copy of Weissbluth, e-mail me! I'd be happy to send it to you! Guest guest
Can I just say ditto! I have twins who are 10 months now and sleep great. The best thing I did was to read BW then throw it out. Wissbluths book is the best.Sent via BlackBerry by AT&TFrom: "jsydney07" <jsydney07@...>Date: Fri, 07 Nov 2008 12:56:32 -0000<Plagiocephaly >Subject: Re: Babywise??? I'm with ... Guest guest
I have to comment too on this. I read Babywise and The Baby Whisperer and I got nothing out of Babywise but a lot of great info out of TBW. She really helped me to recognize the tired signs before it was meltdown time.- Baby Cole with plagioFrom: jsydney07 <jsydney07@...>Plagiocephaly Sent: Friday, November 7, 2008 5:56:32 AMSubject: Re: Babywise???
