I've been lurking here for two weeks and reading and reading trying to get comfortable with the idea of a helmet. My daughter got banded last week (it's been less than a week now) and I too didn't like the fit. It smushed her right eyelid and she looked like she was squinting. It really irritated me that they thought it should be that way. They said they'd trim it if I wanted but they didn't see a problem. I didn't want to go against their advice so I said I'd wait a day or two and think about it. I stewed about it and to their credit they called me the next afternoon and then the day after that I came in and they shaved and trimmed the helmet and the fit was MUCH better and my daughter was visibly happier. Before the adjustment, my daughter wouldn't even look up at me! She could only look down or straight because the helmet was fitting so poorly. I have mixed feelings about CT because although I believe their product works great, they come off as salesmen sometimes if you want anything off their beaten path like a trim before the weekly appointment due to what you believe is a misfit or in my case I wanted a second opinion before even banding and they started to get really ruffled. If I had a smoother experience, I'd be buying stock in their company because I can see the need for the helmets increasing in the immediate future. Thanks ladies for sharing your experiences. The squished eye isn't necessarily a problem so sometimes they just keep an eye on it. However I'm glad they adjusted it so she is more comfortable in her band. Guest guest Posted June 11, 2008 Report Share Posted June 11, 2008 Hi - I can understand your frustration, this was probably a stressful decision for you and you just want your daughter to be comfortable. I would urge you though not to let the smooshed eye issue put a bad taste in your mouth. I think CT prefers to put the band on and then recheck it a week later to see how the band really fits. It's hard to judge in just the first 15 minutes or whatever, and they can't be too quick to cut anything away, because you can't get that part of the band back once it's gone. The ear hole of my son's band pressed down on his ear at the first fitting. The therapist shaved just the tiniest bit away and it still was touching his ear (not bending it or anything, just touching, but when he would move and sleep, it would then press his ear). He assured me it would be fine for now and that we would look at it again at the one-week check. It was the first thing he looked at when we went back in (without my prompting) and he saw that it did need to be shaved just a little bit more, so that's what he did. My son's first band also sat very low on his forehead but it had to, because he had moderate to severe forehead bossing and it needed to be low to get a good holding point. The first few days, all I did was try to push it up out of his eyes, even though the therapist told me specifically to fight the urge. But then I just got used to seeing him wearing it like that and it was fine. My son just got his second band last Monday and after 15 minutes of wearing it, had a red spot on the top of his head but it seemed to fade quite a bit rather quickly. Our therapist said to keep an eye on it and we went home. When we went for our one week check it was still pretty red, and he made a minor shave to the foam to alleviate that pressure. So I think it's important for them to wait at least a week before making any major adjustments. It takes a little time to see how it will fit and how the fit might change or be effected by 23 hour wear. So please don't be discouraged. It sounds like you got the problem fixed to your liking and once you start seeing results, you'll forget all the stress that you've felt in the last few weeks! Good luck!
