Hello. Try not to be too nervous (easier said than done, I know).

Most babies adapt SO well to their bands.

You want to get the highest % of alchohol that you can. You can

usually find like 91% at drug stores, and possibly even the grocery

store. As for red spots, if it gets really red and irritated/raw, you

can usually use hydrocortisone cream.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

I was in your position just 2 weeks ago. It's hard not to be

nervous, but if you act normal around your child and don't show how

anxious you are - I think that helps.

We bought Rubbing alcohol at the grocery store and I rub (scrub) the

inside of the helmet with a washcloth and the rubbing alcohol first.

Then I wash out the helmet with a different washcloth and some

's Baby shampoo - it's mild and I like the smell. And then

another time wiping the helmet with just a wet washcloth. And then

drying it out with a towel. So far we don't have much of a problem

with the helmet smelling.

My son's scalp did seem to be getting a little dry and irriated in

places, so we just started using Aveeno Baby shampoo on him.

Good luck and let us know how it goes!

Just as an FYI, the STARband should not be cleaned with anything other than

rubbing alcohol; that means no water and no shampoo. The instructions from

Orthomerica (makers of the STARband) regarding cleaning the band state:

The cranial orthoses manufactured by Orthomerica can all be cleaned with

78-99% rubbing alcohol. Wet a soft cloth with the alcohol and vigorously

wipe out the entire inside of the orthosis once a day when you remove the

orthosis for your baby's bath. This will help prevent bacteria from building

up on the inner liner and will reduce the odour that is sometimes present.

Make sure the alcohol is completely dry before placing the orthosis back on

the baby's head. If you live in a sunny climate, place the band in the sun

after cleaning it to help it dry. The baby's head should be washed daily

with a mild baby shampoo that will not hurt the eyes. Aveeno shampoo, or Tea

tree oil shampoo made by a company called can soothe some scalp

irritations that can occasionally occur because of heat build-up and

perspiration inside the orthosis.

Instructions for the DOCband are similar; when you get your band from CT ask

them for their specific instructions.
