Guest guest
I am curious how long Jake was in therapy before you could consider his tort " resolved " . We are just starting the process with my Jake - he just turned 7 months old and has had 3 weeks of PT and has been in his STARband for 5 days now. Guest guest
Hi Jenn- It really just depends on the severity of the tort and the age treatment is started, I believe, as well as the consistency of doing exercises at home. My Jake's tort was caught early, at his 2 month check up and we started PT right away. We went every week for 6 or 8 weeks, I can't even really remember now, then we went every 2 weeks, maybe twice, and then for a one-month follow up. The PT will tell you when you're done. Some babies are in PT longer than others. From what I've heard around here, I would say my Jake is probably on the quicker end of things, he was released from therapy in about 3 months or so. I also took him back for a follow up assessment at 18 months old just to see if there was anything tort related to be worried about, since he had reached all his major gross motor milestones, but he was given the all-clear. Good luck with PT and the StarBand! Jake-2 (tort resolved/DOCBand Grad 9/19/08) Jordan-4.5 > > > > Hi all- > > I just wanted to give anyone who was interested an update on my son > > Jake. Guest guest
I just posted before and after photos of Jake, for anyone that is interested. I put together my own photo study because I don't think the CT photostudy turned out all that great (I don't think the flash was working well for our exit photos). Most of Jake's improvement was in his forehead bossing and the base of his skull. A couple of things hindered the process slightly: inuterine shaping/dent on the left side of his forehead; forehead did improve greatly, but I feel it would have improved even more if it weren't for the inuterine shaping (which is harder to correct than just positional plagio). Also, his right lambdoid suture (back right side of his flat spot) began fusing sooner than the others, which kept that side of his flat spot from really popping out. But overall, the shape of his head is a vast improvement from where we started, and I'm really happy with the results. The photos are under Jake W. Guest guest
I'm reading through various posts, and just read your story , and it sounds like you had great success and I checked out the photos and Jakes little round head looks great. It's nice to hear you got such great results even starting a little later. I'm curious why you said that you recommend beginning banding between 6-9 months. I'm curious because Merrick will turn 4-months next week and we decided to band then. Actually we ahve to wait until next week because our insurance won't cover it until then--but at this point we don't feel a few days will hurt. Also, I see that you had the 'traditional' cranial vault in additional to the cranial vault. I'm guessing that is what you were getting at before when you mentioned that the cranial vault might not measure everything if the flatness is low. I wonder if this is something that I should ask for, or if they would do it when they do the mold. Mother to Merrick--16-weeks 4-weeks repo, awaiting DOC band cranial vault 11mm, mid-face 5mm and skull-base 8mm > > Hi all- > I just wanted to give anyone who was interested an update on my son > Jake. Guest guest
Hi - I think I said 6-9 months because that is the average optimal time to band, lots of parents do it before and later. I've heard of some doctors and insurance companies that don't allow it until at least 6 months of age. Four months would be the youngest that most band providers would consider banding. There can still be some repo success between 4 and 6 months, but by 6 months, babies are more mobile and sitting up on their own, so repo becomes less effective, and parents typically turn to banding then. But you're not the only one to decide to band early. If I had been told to band my son when we first saw the neurosurgeon, he would have been 4 months old. Both cranial vault and traditional cranial vault measure the top portion of the head. CT told me to focus on the traditional cranial vault number, that measurement is taken from specific anthropometric landmarks on the skull (fz-eu). You can see what I'm talking about at this site: http://www.plagiocephaly.info/faqs/anthropometry.htm I believe the " regular " cranial vault is less scientific in where the calipers are placed, on the most prominent spot on the occiput (fz-Ocp or Op, also shown at the link above). So for instance my son's beginning TCV was 15mm and his CV was 19mm. So his CV actually showed there was a more prominent area of his occiput beyond the eu landmark, a 4mm difference. They most likely already took both measurements at CT, and I'm sure just gave you the one that they are going to use as a starting point. Although they don't put a whole lot into the measurements as much as how the head actually looks (they only measure before and after treatment, not during). The portion of the head between the occiput and skull base level (ear level and below) of the head is not measured, so that is the area I was referring to, where you could gain growth (like my son did), but may not have it quantified in numbers. Guest guest
Congratulations!!! 8 months seem to be such a long period of time, especially for a baby... It must be a lot of hard work for you. I just have a question about CT measurement. I don't know what is considered normal, mild, moderate, or severe? Is there a standard? Or is there a chart somewhere in the " Files " folder? What would be a perfect, ideal head? Traditional Cranial Vault: 0mm Cranial Vault Asymmetry.: 0mm Skull Base Asymmetry: 0mm ? > > Hi all- > I just wanted to give anyone who was interested an update on my son > Jake. Guest guest
Hi - It depends on who you ask. The therapist at CT told us that " normal " was 2-4 mm (I assume in each category) because no one has a " perfect " head. Some say 0-3 mm is " normal. " I can still see my son's asymmetry (mostly when his hair is wet) and his numbers are 5, 4 and 6mm (as you saw below), but that was after starting at such a late age and was a huge improvement from where we started. If we were only starting at those numbers, I would not have banded him (and CT probably wouldn't have either, if I had tried, because plagio has to be " bad enough " to even be able to correct it). Guest guest
Marcus's first numbers were 8mm cranial vault, 2mm mid-face, and 3mm skull base. I thought that was mild, but CT considered it moderate and recommended banding. He has been in the band for a week now. > > > > > > Hi all- > > > I just wanted to give anyone who was interested an update on my > son > > > Jake. Guest guest
I think 8mm is significant enough to band, and I've heard of a couple start at 7mm I think, but I haven't heard anything less than 6mm receiving treatment. Plus my son was 17 months old at the time we started, so I'm not sure they would have thought it was worth it, but because he was more toward severe (15,19,15), it was worth it to try to get even a little bit of correction. Guest guest
Yes, I agree. 8mm was significant enough for me to repeatedly request help and advice from his DRs. I wanted him to get treatment, but they kept telling me it wasnt worth it and to wait and see. I'm glad I pushed and got him a band even though he's only 4.5 months. > > > > > > > > > > Hi all- > > > > > I just wanted to give anyone who was interested an update on > my > > > son > > > > > Jake. Guest guest
Hi : I enjoyed reading your story - thanks for posting it. I have a question about the torticollis. My son has this as well with plagiocephaly and we will for go for banding soon. Does the torticollis have to be resolved prior to banding? We are doing physical therapy for his torticollis now so it is a work in progress. Did Jake's torticollis resolve on its own? Thank you, chehemann@... > > > > Hi all- > > I just wanted to give anyone who was interested an update on my son > > Jake. Guest guest
Hi! Sorry for the delay in responding... No, the tort does not need to be resolved before banding. My son's was, only because we didn't band him until he was 17 months old, and he had been out of PT for the tort since he was 6 months old. But a lot of babies are treated simultaneously for both. And no, Jake's tort did not resolve on it's own. He started PT when he was 2 months old, once a week, then progressed to once every other week, then had a 1 month follow up and was released from PT when he was 6 months old. I think starting early really helped us resolve the problem faster. And he's never had any residual effects (thus far). Hope that helps!
